How To Get Control of Your Makeup Junk Drawer!

If you’ve ever opened your makeup drawer and felt like you were staring into a cosmetic black hole, you’re not alone. Most of us have what I lovingly call a “makeup junk drawer”—the place where good intentions go to hide under half-used palettes and long-forgotten samples. But I have a tip that will instantly give you breathing room: toss your UMOs—Unidentifiable Makeup Objects. Yes, those mystery lipsticks, ancient eye pencils, and tiny jars you don’t even remember you had or know you’ll never use.

Just because you got the lipstick for free doesn’t mean it deserves permanent residency in your drawer. I adore a great GWP (gift with purchase) as much as anyone, but let’s be honest: those freebies are expert squatters. They take up space, create clutter, and rarely end up being the products we actually reach for. If you already know you’ll never wear that bold shade or use that random skin-care packet, let it go.

And here’s the feel-good part: instead of tossing perfectly good (unused) items, consider donating them to a women’s shelter or community center. Something you’ll never touch again might bring confidence and joy to someone who truly needs it. Cleaning up your stash while making someone else’s day? That’s a win-win.

Ultimately, keep only what works for you—the shades that flatter, the products that make getting ready feel effortless rather than overwhelming. When your makeup drawer contains only what you love and actually use, you’ll save space, time, and sanity. And every morning, instead of digging around like you’re on a cosmetic treasure hunt, you’ll easily find what you need and start your day feeling beautifully organized.

Travel Tip – Save the sample sizes and small jars of the products you do like for when you travel. I keep those separately in my toiletry bag, ready to go!
