A Sunset Stroll on the High Line
Among the Summer events of The Three Tomatoes Insiders Club was a recent evening stroll on the High Line, planned for the golden hour when urbanites long to exchange the noise of Manhattan for sunset views, wild gardens, lush landscaping, art installations, and views of the Hudson River for one perfect walk. A 1.5-mile stroll began by the Whitney Museum and ended at Hudson Yards, led by a very knowledgeable and charming volunteer guide who made the stories, the history, and the industrial heritage of this landmark park come to live!
And did you know?
A TRANSFORMATIVE URBAN CONCEPT
The High Line, built atop a historic freight line, sparked a global trend in “rail-to-trail” urban revitalization, inspiring cities worldwide to transform obsolete infrastructures into dynamic public space. The High Line acts as an elevated escape from the concrete grid, allowing visitors to wander from the Meatpacking District through Chelsea to Hudson Yards without interacting with street-level traffic,
COMMUNITY DRIVEN ROOTS
Destined for demolition in the late 1990’s, local residents rallied to save the structure. They formed a non-profit Friends of the High Line which partnered with the City to turn an eyesore into one of the most beloved public spaces in the country.
THE “HIGH LINE EFFECT”
Beyond the aesthetics, the park is famous for its economic impact. It catalyzed one of the largest real estate and redevelopment booms in Manhattan, significantly raising property values and bringing billions in new investments and tax revenues to surrounding neighborhoods.
And for me, the walk was a gentle reminder of the health and wellness benefits
of a leisurely stroll, communing with Nature, and enjoying the company of kindred spirits…providing moments of “calm” and community in an otherwise hectic City life. The evening was capped by dinner at Spanish Hall and cheers for the US Soccer team!
Many thanks to Insider Club member Carmen Mathias for arranging this event.
