Miami Life: The Pelican Hotel, Tiffany’s, Burlesque, The Underline

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The owners of Diesel have restored the art deco Pelican Hotel in Miami. and I plan to visit the Pelican Cafe so I can celebrate the entire restoration. You can’t imagine how excited I was when I learned that Tiffany & Co. has opened its first-ever pop-up café in Miami so you can now have breakfast at Tiffany. After being locked up for so long during Covid, an old-fashion burlesque show to help celebrate the holidays, is just what we need. New York has the “High Line,” but Miami has “The Underline” and there’s fab music event on December 16.

The owners of Diesel have restored the Art Deco Pelican Hotel in Miami

If the restoration of the Pelican Hotel on Ocean Drive made headlines in WWD, you know it has to be a major story. I included the link to the story. Renzo Rosso is a very famous and wealthy Italian fashion entrepreneur and businessman. You know him because he is the founder of Diesel and the president of OTB Group, the parent company of Maison MargielaMarniViktor & RolfJil Sander, and more. In 2022, Forbes estimated his net worth to be US$3.6 billion.

I love him because he saw the beauty in Ocean Drive in 1990 when he bought the Pelican Hotel. While most of his family and friends told him he was nuts to buy a building in Miami Beach which was long considered to be the place where people went to die. He saw just the opposite. One look at the ocean, sand, and the widest views of the sky he has ever seen, he immediately envisioned the potential of the very unique strip of land. Rosso always points out that he loves Ocean Drive, he also loves all of Miami Beach. Those were the exact words of Gianni Versace when he bought his mansion a few blocks from the Pelican just around the same time. Mel Schlesser, a famous criminal lawyer in New York, felt the same way when he gave up his law practice during this time to become a real estate developer in South Beach.

As the WWD story outlines, “The Pelican has undergone a two-year renovation under the helm of Rosso and his son, Andrea, and has reopened just in time for winter travels. The new Pelican still features 32 uniquely designed rooms (originally designed differently because when he asked his design team for ideas Rosso got back 32 different ones and gave one room to each), which have been updated with newly acquired antique furniture and pieces sourced around Miami.

“The concept was already there: The fact that every room has this vintage, secondhand feeling from the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, ’60s, was amazing, because we went to the vintage market and we’d find all these things and put them all together,” Andrea says. “There’s something special in every room. We scouted all over here in Miami and also outside of Miami.”

Themes of the room vary from a Diesel denim “old glory” to a James Bond-inspired penthouse (where Rosso prefers to stay when in town, like this past week for Art Basel).”

In the next week or so I plan to visit the Pelican Cafe so I can celebrate the entire restoration. The Cafe is the creation of Italian chef Wendy Cacciatori and is offering “modern-inspired Italian food, from breakfast through late-night drinks.” That’s good enough for me.

Truman Capote Lives

You can now have breakfast at Tiffany’s in Miami. You can’t imagine how excited I was when I learned that Tiffany & Co. has opened its first-ever pop-up café in the Miami Design District for the holidays. Tiffany says “You can now cross embracing your inner Holly Golightly off of your bucket list because we have taken over the OTL Café in the Design District for a holiday pop-up.”

It’s like having Truman Capote alive again. We can all pretend now that we are “Ladies who Lunch.“ Gossiping with Capote was a privilege of the high society. All went sour when Capote started to give away the secrets. He was never forgiven.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s was such a great movie. Based on Truman Capote’s novel, this is the story of a young woman in New York City who meets a young man when he moves into her apartment building. He is with an older woman who is very wealthy, but he wants to be a writer. She is working as an expensive escort and searching for a rich, older man to marry.

The new pop-up cafe is going to bring back all those memories for so many fans. The ultra luxury store is promoting that everyone who watched the 1960s classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” has dreamed of the day where they too could sip coffee and eat a croissant at the iconic jewelry store, tiara and all.

Tiffany now says “You can now cross embracing your inner Holly Golightly off of your bucket list because we have now taken over the OTL Café in the Design District for a holiday pop-up.”

Tiffany & Co.commissioned artists Kai & Sunny to transform the two-level storefront with the brand’s signature blue hue and a pattern of fluid and dynamic lines. The Tiffany & Co. holiday pop-up and café, located at 160 Northeast 40th Street, is open now through January 31st. It will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, click here.

A Burlesque Show, Just What The Doctor Ordered

After being locked up for so long during Covid, I vote for an old-fashion burlesque show to help celebrate the holidays this year. We need to make sure the glitz is on. The kind of show I’m talking about is called, Spectacular Spectacular, and it promises to have the best performance artists in Miami.  The show is located  at the Flamingo Theater Bar (905 Brickell Bay Dr). Expect to see astounding acrobatics and a stunning aerial show. Warning: “Spectacular Spectacular puts on a classy and seductive production unlike any other.”

Spectacular Spectacular says the  artform of burlesque as we know it today is over 150 years old. “It’s an astounding display of acrobatics, dance, theatricality, and often comedy. Every production is unique, and Spectacular Spectacular is continuing this long tradition with modern flair.” The show runs an hour long. An advertisement says the show will make you gasp, cheer, and stay on the edge of your seat. That’s sounds good to me.
