LA Stories: The Emperor’s Nude Clothes & Grey Matter

LA Story: The Emperor’s Nude Clothes

Nude is one of my favorite colours. It’s sexy, elevated, and contemporary especially in a tonal look. It’s important to choose the right shade or things can go from chic to cheap in the blink of an eye. I’ve combined some inexpensive separates to create a look that feels elevated and effortlessly pulled together. Let’s break it down…

I’m wearing a somewhat heavy, chalky, matte, oversized raglan sweatshirt, H & M, with this season’s trending elongated short sleeve over a very light weight sheer georgette pencil skirt that’s covered in large shiny pailettes, Forever 21. The juxtaposition of my garments bring focus to each fabric, texture, and shape to make this combo interesting to the eye.

My cooky boots, Amiclubwear, are pretty innocuous; perfect for this kind of look and their transparency ties back to my skirt. What I find most interesting about these boots is the slight beige detailing down the front and in the back. That tiny bit of colour led me to choosing this neck scarf, Amazon, instead of a necklace – funny how inspiration works. A bandana print is casual by nature but on silk it becomes elevated especially in beige and white. It’s the one single piece that represents each element of my look – the perfect bridge to pull everything together.

*pro-tip: nude can be tricky so make sure you choose the right shade for your skin and garments with enough textural and dimensional difference to keep it interesting.

LA Story: Grey Matter

In the garment industry, we call a dress like this a “back against the wall” dress for obvious reasons. It’s an inexpensive way to achieve the look of a pricier garment at a fraction of the cost. When I saw the style of this dress, Shein, the colour (one of my favorites), and the tencel fabric, I had to snatch it up.

The empire pin-tuck stitching on the extended corset-style bodice gives my short torso length. The drop skirt is full and flowy, and the bit of sheen from the fabric is everything I want in a summer dress. Now, I’ve got to work on my tan.

A big plus for a dress like this is that it doesn’t require much in regard to styling. Another reason it’s perfect for the summer months and the odd spring days like today, where it’s sweltering outside. My black flat t-strap thong-style sandals, Sam Edelman, a straw bag, Bohemia Marrakech, and some grey Tahitian pearls are pretty much it.

*style-tip: don’t invest in high ticket garments for Summer when there are so many inexpensive alternatives.

*please treat your wardrobe well. many people work very hard to get it to you.
