March 25 – 30.  And Still We Rise

LA LIFE: Women’s Theatre, Trailblazers, Tomatomania, Broadway

A little birdie told me that “And Still We Rise” from the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, a multi-cultural festival of Solo Artists, will be just as fantabulous virtually as it has been in the past 27years. No foolin’.  It’s a celebration of women in…you guessed it…Theatre, Tomatoes.

LAWTF, now 28 years young, is the longest running festival of female solo artists in Los Angeles and has continued to expand in a variety of marvelous ways.  The virtual Champagne GALA and Awards Ceremony will take place Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.PST and will be hosted by Ted Lange (The Love Boat) and Hattie Winston (Becker). WITH Fay Hauser-Price (Hope Builders) at the helm as Festival Director.

The event will honor five women of exceptional achievement and contribution to the world of theatre. There will be live performances in addition to the awards presentation. And throughout the entire festival you can enjoy and be amazed by incredible presentations from awesome women artists. LAWTF celebrates artistic diversity and endeavors to empower women artists to engage and inspire communities through the production of multidisciplinary solo performances and educational outreach.

March 21-April 18. IAMA Presents

LA LIFE: Women’s Theatre, Trailblazers, Tomatomania, Broadway

Strong female voices and their perspectives are at the heart of IAMA Theatre Company’s two virtual entertaining theatre offerings: “Anyone But Me” and “The Oxy Complex”. Both are performed by fiercely funny and powerful storytellers as well as being written and directed by women.  Yahoo!

And they were filmed live at L.A.’s Pico Playhouse. Anyone But Me, written and performed by Sheila Carrasco, explores female identity and the women who struggle with it and the personas they create in order to get by. Women who want to be someone they are not.  Set during the 500th day of quarantine, The Oxy Complex, written and performed by Anna LaMadrid, is a dark comedy about loneliness, love, sex, modern dating, trauma and oxytocin – the hormone that affects it all. “Each brings her own unique theatrical expression to our virtual stage, begging the audience to stay present and look within.” states co-artistic directors Stefanie Black and Katie Lowes. Check it out, Tomatoes.

AMA Theatre Company, conceived in 2007, is a Los Angeles-based ensemble of artists eager to create new theater in Los Angeles. Working with a shared commitment to exploration and development, IAMA seeks to challenge themselves and their audience by producing original works within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary ensemble.

March 21. Julia Morgan Event

LA LIFE: Women’s Theatre, Trailblazers, Tomatomania, Broadway

In honor of Women’s History Month, join the SM Beach House and the Santa Monica Conservancy for a virtual special commemoration of Julia Morgan, California’s first licensed woman architect, whose legacy includes 700+ projects, Tomatoes. Holy Moly!

Yep! 700 + in almost 50 years. Julia Morgan designed the Guest House and the pool at the Beach House which is the site’s historic core and… was known for her collaboration with William Randolph Hearst to create Hearst Castle. Geez! It is definitely worth getting to know this trailblazing woman.

Posthumously she was awarded the AIA’s highest honor, a Gold Medal, for her brilliant and pioneering work. Karen McNeil Ph. D., Julia Morgan scholar and leading expert, will talk on women and gender in the architectural profession as well as how Progressive Era women used the built environment to expand their roles in society as consumers, reformers, educators, and professionals. Julia Morgan continues to gain public recognition and you can help increase that by tuning in, Tomatoes.
