I’m sad that summer is officially over (even if the calendar or weather doesn’t agree), it just arrives and then poof it’s gone in a cloud of fog. That just means a host of events are on the horizon and see below if you are looking for adventure. Architecture and the city festival hits the area on September 1st and a classic mystery-thriller by Hitchcock comes to Mountain View. Enjoy your three-day weekend!
Labor Day Activities
Labor Day in the bay – so many activities from which to choose.
Sausalito Art Festival
The Sausalito Art Festival is always a good place to head. Great music, amazing artists and fun folks all celebrating the end of summer with a smile and tapping feet. Take the ferry and wear your walking shoes, the best way to get there.
BBQ and Bacchus
The annual Labor Day BBQ and Bacchus happens on Monday at The Winery SF. Yes tomatoes, the wine country on Treasure Island Beautiful views of the bay, barbecue, wine tasting, music and friends. No clean up for you! Bacchus is a great find if you haven’t been there. Treasure Island is truly a treasure. Get details here.
Golden Gate Park Band
Want to do something old-timey? The Golden Gate Park Band presents its 137th season in Golden Gate Park’s music concourse. The weekly concerts take place on Sundays at 1p.m and run about 90 minutes and they are free! Special performance on Labor Day Monday as well. It’s such a fun afternoon out, bike around the park, hit the museums and listen to music. These ladies and gents offer a variety of music including classic band favorites, operas, and marches, show tunes, swing music and more. Dancing on the sidelines occurs! http://goldengateparkband.org
August Hall
If the weather is less than perfect and Karl is bugging you, head indoors to a hidden gaming parlor in Union Square. Recently renovated, August Hall is such fun to visit. Located at 420 Mason Street and originally a Victorian Playhouse in the 1890’s, this venue has a music hall, plush cocktail room and downstairs a cocktail, dining and gaming parlor with three bowling lanes- the first and only in Union Square. The menu is not your typical bowling palace, and includes grass-fed sliders, salads and pizzas with hand pulled mozzarella and yummy sourdough crust. Mime Group
Don’t be afraid of the mimes in The San Francisco Mime Troupe as they present their newest work, Treasure Island. This Tony Award winning troupe are hardly silent. The troupe presents it’s hysterical original tale, Treasure Island for the next few weekends. Their definition of mime means: to mimic. They are satirists seeking to make us laugh at the absurdities of contemporary life, and at the same time see the causes.
Socially relevant theater is what you will find when you watch a performance. Treasure Island – is it the mythical isle where untold wealth awaits marauding pirates, or the freezing cold artificial island in the middle of the SF Bay awaiting development – or is it both? Hitchcock at TheatreWorks
TheatreWorks’ acclaimed hit comedy returns in a hilarious, high-speed spoof of Alfred Hitchcock’s silver-screen classic, The 39 Steps. Mingling mystery and laughter, this irresistible Broadway smash hurtles a notorious fugitive and a spellbound blond from a raucous London music hall to Scotland’s most remote highlands—and a den of devious spies.

Architecture and The City
WE THE CITY is this year’s Architecture + the city’s festival theme aiming to explore how cultural diversity and connectivity inspire and inform the built environment. This month long program includes the highly anticipated San Francisco Living Home Tours. More than just a tour this is a festival that explores and reveals the many layers of our history and how architecture and design play a key role in the ever-changing urban landscape.
Every year they open our eyes to a “new” city, even if we have lived here forever. In addition to the tours there is an Author’s Series, exhibitions, and discussions. There are opportunities to learn about who gets to live in the New Urban America and hear an SF based architect and author discuss his book on 20th century Modern Architecture as seen through the photographer Ezra Stoller.www.archandcity.org
