Why We Need a Linchpin

A linchpin is a pin that keeps a wheel from slipping off its axle—a small piece with the enormous responsibility of holding everything together. Over time, the word came to describe a person or thing essential to making it all work, and in 2026, I find myself thinking about how much we need one.

We recognize that person in our families and friendships: the one who makes the call, brings everyone to the table, and finds a way forward when no one else seems to know what to do. But when we look beyond our own circles, toward our country and its future, who fills that role?

Who is holding things together? Who is thinking beyond the next election, the next headline, or the next round of applause? And how do we distinguish someone who wants to carry that responsibility from someone who simply wants the power that comes with it?

There is comfort in believing someone has a hand on the wheel, especially when we are tired, uncertain, or hoping someone else has the answers. We want to believe there is a plan and someone capable of getting us there. But our need for reassurance does not relieve us of the responsibility to ask where we are going and what we are being asked to accept along the way.

Can we question someone we supported? Can we recognize a good idea from someone we opposed? Can we acknowledge that our opinions are sometimes shaped by people who are not well informed, or who have a personal stake in the outcome? Can we still agree that holding a country together requires room for people who see things differently?

Perhaps that is where the search becomes more difficult. We may be looking for one person to do something that requires all of us. A leader carries responsibility, but so do the people who choose that leader, defend that leader, or remain silent when something troubles them.

When was the last time we added our voice to the conversation? Raised a hand, asked a question, or spoke up about something that mattered to us? We may not always know how much difference we can make, but perhaps we begin by remembering that our voices belong in the room, too.

I wonder whether the linchpin we need is a shared willingness to care about what happens beyond whether our own side wins. To listen, to question, and to remember that we will still have to live together after the votes are counted.

I wonder because it’s important. I wonder because it matters. And I wonder because we need to figure it out before someone figures it out for us.

Barbara Davis

I am a New Jersey based realtor by day and a storyteller by night. In addition to helping people find their next chapter in real estate, I serve as a contributing writer for the Bernardsville News, where I share reflections on home, community, and the moments that quietly shape our lives.

Today, I’m expanding my storytelling through my upcoming blog, Real Talk with Barbara Davis, where I explore market challenges, the stories behind the sale, and the meaningful connections that form within every neighborhood. My debut novel, "Denim Wars" was published in 2026.

Before entering real estate, I spent many years in the fashion industry, both wholesale and retail, ultimately serving as Vice President at The Barrett Group. Prior to that, I owned and operated The Red Toad, LLC for more than 30 years, using my fashion platform as a way to build community, elevate local voices, and support charitable initiatives.

My writing is rooted in lived experience. I am drawn to the stories beneath the surface, the quiet resilience people carry, the unexpected turns that reshape us, and the courage it takes to move forward even when the path is unclear. My goal is simple: to bring clarity, to remind people that they are not alone, and to offer the confidence to take their next step, or their next leap. Through both my work and my words, I hope to create a soft place to land for anyone who needs it.
