Spotlight on Long Island: Morning Routines that Inspire
“She Rises Like the Sun: Morning Routines to Inspire an April Mindset”
There’s something magical about April mornings on Long Island—the way the light stretches a little longer, the birdsong grows a little louder, and hope seems to arrive with the sunrise. For many women, especially those in their golden years, these early hours are more than a peaceful pause—they’re a sacred ritual, a reset, a chance to step into the day with clarity and intention.
From brisk walks along the shoreline to journaling by a sunny window or sipping tea in the garden, Long Island women are embracing morning routines that nourish the soul and set the tone for the day ahead.
Denise Hartman, 59 – Entrepreneur and Grandmother, Huntington
Denise swears by her ‘three S’s’ morning ritual: Silence, Sunlight, and Smoothie. She sits in silence for 10 minutes, steps outside for fresh air, and blends up a spinach-pineapple smoothie. “It sets the tone—clean mind, clean energy.”
Arlene Figueroa, 62 – Painter and Breast Cancer Survivor, Sayville
Each morning at 7:00 a.m., Arlene lights a candle in her home studio and paints for 20 minutes, no matter how busy the day ahead. “Even if it’s just color on canvas, I feel like I’m giving myself back a piece of joy,” she shares.
Ruth Silverstein, 75 – Retired Teacher and Nature Photographer, Northport
Ruth begins her morning by photographing her backyard birds. “The cardinals show up like clockwork,” she says. She pairs the ritual with a mug of chamomile and a check-in on her daily affirmations posted on her fridge.
Josie Romano – Centenarian and Community Volunteer

At 100 years young, Josie Romano of Mount Sinai exemplifies vitality and community spirit. Known for her culinary contributions with the Sons of Italy and her longstanding volunteer work at St. Anthony’s thrift store since 1987, Josie’s zest for life is contagious. She even taught line dancing until the age of 95. Her secrets to longevity? Good food, the occasional drink, and a love for dancing. Josie celebrated her milestone birthday with lively entertainment, including celebrity impressions and tap dancing, proving that age is truly just a number. Her morning routine? She wakes up grateful for her life.
Whether you rise with the sun or simply take a quiet moment before the day begins, remember—each morning in April is a gift, full of potential. Let it be a time to honor yourself, to dream a little bigger, and to move through the season with purpose and peace.
