Long Island’s Best Daycations: One Town at a Time

Northport: “This is where the harbor meets the heart.”

Last week, our journey took us to the picturesque harbor village of Greenport on Long Island’s North Fork. This week, we’re crossing over to the North Shore to discover another village that has quietly captured the hearts of Long Islanders for generations.

Situated along the shores of Northport Harbor, this charming waterfront village invites you to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and rediscover the simple pleasures that make summer so special. Here, there aren’t any amusement parks or crowded boardwalks competing for your attention. Instead, you’ll find tree-lined streets, welcoming shopkeepers, beautiful harbor views, wonderful restaurants, and a pace of life that reminds us to enjoy the moment. It is a reminder of the feeling we get from the popular song “Amazing” by the band Areosmith. “Life’s a journey, not a destination.” So, grab a friend, your spouse, or simply enjoy a day on your own as you spend one perfect day in Northport.

8:30 a.m. – Begin Your Day at Copenhagen Bakery

75 Woodbine Avenue, Northport

Every perfect day deserves a delicious beginning.

A family-owned Northport favorite since 1998, Copenhagen Bakery is famous for its authentic Danish pastries, buttery croissants, fresh breads, cookies, cakes, and rich European coffee. The aroma of cinnamon, butter, and freshly baked pastries greets you before you even reach the counter.

Order your favorite coffee and indulge in one of their flaky Danish pastries or warm cinnamon rolls before beginning your day of exploration.

My Personal Tip: Sit outside and soak in the harbor views as you sip your morning beverage. It’s a very relaxing way to get your day started.

9:30 a.m. – Wander Historic Main Street

One of the greatest pleasures of Northport is simply strolling its beautiful Main Street. It is filled with independently owned boutiques, bookstores, art galleries, antique shops, gift stores, home décor boutiques, and specialty food shops. Every storefront is beautifully decorated and seems to invite you inside. During our family visit to Northport, we go to The Olive Tree, our favorite shop, located at 114 Main Street. Here is where we stock up on flavorful, infused olive oils. They have over 65 unique flavors to select from. You can even sample the flavors before you decide which one to purchase. Then, off to the next shop we go.

Unlike large shopping centers, Northport offers something increasingly rare. The shop owners greet you with a smile. The stores are filled with treasures you won’t find anywhere else. Don’t hurry. Some of the best discoveries happen when you simply wander.

My Personal Tip: Venture down the side streets. Some of Northport’s most charming shops are tucked just beyond Main Street.

11:00 a.m. – Relax at Cow Harbor Park

Just steps from Main Street sits the heart of Northport. Cow Harbor Park overlooks one of Long Island’s prettiest harbors, where sailboats, fishing boats, and yachts gently sway against the backdrop of the Long Island Sound.

Find a bench beneath the shade trees, listen to the gulls overhead, watch the boats come and go, and enjoy the peaceful rhythm that makes Northport so special. During the summer months, the park often hosts concerts and community events that add even more charm to the village.

My Personal Tip: Take a few minutes to simply sit quietly. Sometimes the best part of the day is doing absolutely nothing.

12:30 p.m. – Lunch at The Feed and Grain at 73 Main

73 Main Street, Northport

Housed inside a beautifully restored historic building that once served the local farming community, The Feed and Grain at 73 Main has become one of Northport’s favorite gathering places. Its warm rustic atmosphere, exposed brick, and creative American menu make it the perfect lunch destination. Choose from fresh seafood, handcrafted sandwiches, seasonal salads, burgers, and chef-inspired specials while enjoying the relaxed village atmosphere. Our favorite item to order is the fresh-made sushi prepared on-site by their chef, Bryan.

My Personal Tip: Ask your server about the seasonal specials. They are often the highlight of the menu.

2:00 p.m. – Discover Northport’s Artistic Side

Northport has long inspired artists, photographers, musicians, and writers.

Spend your afternoon exploring the village’s art galleries, specialty boutiques, bookstores, and gift shops. You never know what hidden treasure you’ll discover. A handcrafted piece of pottery, an original painting of Northport Harbor, or the perfect gift for someone special is bound to catch your eye.

While you’re strolling, stop by the Northport Historical Society & Museum (215 Main Street). This charming museum tells the fascinating story of Northport’s shipbuilding heritage, maritime history, and the people who helped shape this beautiful village. It’s a wonderful way to appreciate Northport beyond its scenic waterfront.

My Personal Tip: Don’t watch the clock. Northport is meant to be enjoyed one leisurely step at a time.

4:30 p.m. – One More Harbor Walk

Before dinner, return to the beautiful harbor for another leisurely stroll or sit on a bench to enjoy the view. This is when Northport truly begins to slow down. And so should you.

7:00 p.m. – Sunset at Cow Harbor Park

As evening approaches, make your way back to Cow Harbor Park for one of Northport’s most beautiful moments. Sunset over the Long Island Sound is worth waiting for. My family and I absolutely love sunsets. We try to enjoy them as often as possible. Northport’s sunsets are soft, peaceful, and wonderfully romantic. The harbor glows as sailboats gently rock in the water and the sky fills with shades of gold, pink, lavender, and orange. It’s the perfect place to pause and appreciate the beauty of a Long Island summer evening.

My Personal Tip: Take one photograph, then put your phone away. Some sunsets deserve your full attention, and a Northport sunset is one of those.

8:00 p.m. – Dinner at The Northport Hotel Restaurant

225 Main Street, Northport

End your perfect day at the elegant restaurant inside the stunning Northport Hotel, one of the village’s newest landmarks.

Beautifully designed and warmly welcoming, the restaurant offers exceptional American cuisine featuring fresh seafood, steaks, seasonal specialties, handcrafted cocktails, and an impressive wine list. Enjoy an unhurried dinner while reflecting on a day well spent in one of Long Island’s most charming villages. The dress code is smart casual, polished, and upscale. Yes, we pack a change of clothes for this restaurant when we spend the full day in Northport.

My Personal Tip: Make reservations in advance. It is a wildly popular restaurant.

9:30 p.m. – One Last Sweet Treat

Stop by Northport Sweet Shop (55 Main Street) and treat yourself to a scoop of homemade ice cream or an old-fashioned soda. Run by the same family since 1929, it is a favorite for locals and visitors. And I’m sure it will be one of your favorites too. It’s the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Northport doesn’t try to impress you with grand attractions or flashy entertainment.

Instead, it quietly captures your heart with friendly smiles, beautiful harbor views, locally owned shops, wonderful restaurants, and a pace of life that reminds us to slow down and savor every moment.

Sometimes the most memorable places aren’t the ones that ask us to do more.

They’re the ones that gently remind us to do less.
