Sonnets from Suburbia: Christmas Table

As we reflect on 2022 and the holidays, Lady Penelope has a few words about “Christmas” as she describes a family Christmas scene that is quintessential Lady Penelope.

Christmas Table

The usual one-ups-man-ship prevailed

around the Christmas table where they sat,

pretending all was well while they assailed

and criticized each other tit for tat.

How humorous that siblings fiercely cling

to ancient arguments when they’re adults.

Through gritted teeth the Yuletide carols sing

and underneath their breath whisp’ring insults.

But mercif’lly a tender moment came

when mother softly spoke rem’bring him

whose memory could put them all to shame,

Their quarrelsomeness offending cherubim.

Relief and tears revived their late good will.

So grateful that they loved each other still.
