Fleet Week is Here!
San Francisco’s annual Fleet Week is feeling the effects of a federal government shutdown but never fear, Canada has stepped in to help The shutdown has led to what officials have described as a pause in U.S. Military participation in the event, meaning the Fleet Week Air Show will go ahead without its marquee attraction, the Blue Angels. Instead, this year’s Fleet Week Air Show will now be headlined by the Canadian Snowbirds. the Canadian Forces Snowbirds are an elite air demonstration squadron that perform aerial acrobatics in tight formations very much in the style of the Blue Angels. On October 19th in Redwood City at Courthouse Square, two local tomatoes will host a huge event featuring many vendors selling all types of gently used clothing. Kim’s Convenience at A.C.T.
Theatre in the Bay Area offers premieres, unique shows, and something for everyone. Perhaps you were a fan of the Netflix series Kim’s Convenience? If so you will definitely want to check this out. The show was originally a play written by Ins Choi about a family from Korea running a corner convenience store in Toronto. He calls it a love letter to his parents as well as all of Canada’s first-generation immigrants. It premiered at Toronto’s Fringe Festival in 2011, then went on to tour theaters in North America—including a run off-Broadway—before being made into the popular Netflix show starring, among others, Simu Liu, now of Marvel movies and Barbie fame. At A.C.T., Choi, who originally portrayed son Jung, will play the title role of the father. Now through October 19th at A.C.T.’s Toni Rembe Theatre. KIM’S CONVENIENCE
The Hills of California…Now at the Berkely.
Don’t miss The West Coast premiere of Tony-winning playwright Jez Butterworth’s story about four sisters returning to a seaside guest house where they grew up with a mother who wanted them to have a career as a singing group. “The Hills of California” explores how sibling bonds both sustain and suffocate, and how songs of youth echo through life. This is the compelling, tender, and savagely funny tale of the Webb sisters’ return to their childhood home in an English seaside town. As girls, their fierce and ambitious mother trained them for a singing career à la The Andrews Sisters. Now, past and present collide within the once-vibrant guesthouse as memories resurface with haunting clarity. October 31 – December 7th at Berkeley Rep. THE HILLS OF CALIFORNIA
A Floating Sauna
Self care is always a good idea and if you love a cold plunge, and we do mean cold, you will want to book a reservation for the newest wellness center located at the Sausalito Marina. FJORD, the sauna with sweeping views of Tiburon, Angel Island, and the San Francisco skyline in the distance has only been open for a few months, but the minimalist Nordic-style wellness center is booked solid for many months. It’s the hottest reservation in the Bay Area.
Each of the two saunas has benches on two levels that can accommodate up to six people at a time, and a picture window that spans the entire exterior wall. A large stone heater chugs away in the corner, warming the space to a target 190 degrees Fahrenheit—Fjord has only a few requirements: wear a bathing suit, sit on a towel (bring your own or buy one there), don’t swim past the buoys, and rinse off the saltwater before reentering the sauna. Good for the parasympathetic nervous system if you can handle the 55 degree temps. Richardson Bay, where it is located is quite pristine and is flushed out by the tides and monitored weekly for contamination from April through October. FLOATING SAUNA
