NYC Life: Renewal Recap, Summer Kickoff, Remembering
Our Renewal Summit was a glorious event, and we have a recap. It may not feel like summer quite yet, but here we are —Memorial Day weekend. The fleet is in, and if you encounter our men and women in uniform, make sure to thank them, and enjoy some of the many celebrations. And take a moment to pause this weekend to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedoms. We have a few summer kick-off events, and if the weather doesn’t cooperate for outdoor fun, consider a trip to the Guggenheim, which is where our roving photographer was roaming recently. Enjoy your long weekend, Tomatoes.

Roving in the Guggenheim
Our roving photographer Nicole Freezer Rubens writes:
Immerse yourself in Rashid Johnson’s all-encompassing world at his survey show at the Guggenheim Museum. Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers is a rotating world of the artist’s conceptual multimedia work over the last 30 years, focusing on his life experience through pop culture, art history, and dimension.
The bold use of plant life accompanying the visitor up the Frank Lloyd Wright ramps, with potted plants flying overhead, creates an indoor jungle of natural and unnatural life in the balance. The dramatic culmination of this 90-piece exhibition at the top of the rotunda is titled Sanguine, which is a room-like, large-scale shelf system filled with plants in absolutely scrumptious ceramic pots. Embedded in this installation is a piano, and there are live musical performances and poetry readings scheduled as part of the show.
On view through January 18, 2026, this grand retrospective offers insights into the artist’s experience and is in harmony with the spiraling Guggenheim space, both offering a unique perspective on the viewing of art. This is truly a deeply thought-out and beautifully poetic show!

The tomato behind The Three Tomatoes.
Cheryl Benton, aka the “head tomato” is founder and publisher of The Three Tomatoes, a digital lifestyle magazine for “women who aren’t kids”. Having lived and worked for many years in New York City, the land of size zero twenty-somethings, she was truly starting to feel like an invisible woman. She created The Three Tomatoes just for the fun of it as the antidote for invisibility and sent it to 60 friends. Today she has thousands of friends and is chief cheerleader for smart, savvy women who want to live their lives fully at every age and every stage. She is the author of the novel, "Can You See Us Now?" and co-author of a humorous books of quips, "Martini Wisdom." Because she's lived a long time, her full bio won't fit here.
