Monet and Venice at the Brooklyn Museum

Step into the luminous world of Claude Monet’s final artistic chapter with Monet and Venice, the largest Monet exhibition in New York City in over 25 years. Featuring 19 rarely seen Venetian paintings created during Monet’s only visit to Venice in 1908, this immersive exhibition invites you to experience the city’s shimmering canals, majestic architecture, and ever-changing light through the eyes of an Impressionist master.

Alongside Monet’s works, explore over 100 paintings, sketches, books, and ephemera that trace Venice’s enduring allure across centuries. Discover pieces by Canaletto, Turner, Renoir, and John Singer Sargent, each offering a unique lens on the floating city.

This multisensory journey includes:

  • A custom fragrance by Joya Studio evoking the marine air of Venice
  • A 36-minute original symphony by composer Niles Luther, inspired by Monet’s Venetian palette
  • Sonic installations and atmospheric lighting that echo Monet’s fascination with light and water

Curated by Lisa Small (Brooklyn Museum) and Melissa Buron (Victoria and Albert Museum), Monet and Venice reveals a discreet yet pivotal moment in Monet’s career—when he surrendered to the beauty he once deemed “too perfect to paint.”

Roving on the Mountaintop

Nicole Freezer Rubens writes:

Over the holiday weekend, my family escaped for one last trip up north to Quebec to bookend the summer season and rejoice. Our Canadian friends celebrate their Thanksgiving during this time of peak fall foliage. In addition to the annual Oktoberfest festival at the local mountain, we were anxiously awaiting the release of the hostages in Israel, all adding to the extremely festive mood permeating the cool and colorful autumn air.

Going to the mountaintop and taking in the expanse of the constant, complex beauty of nature, reminds me of how small we are and how so many things and people must come together to keep the world spinning in the right direction. Fall has always been my favorite season because it is a reminder of real potential and renewal. Our weekend was one of true change, hope and finally being able to breathe a little deeper.
