Miami Life Insider’s Guide: Colony Theater, Miami Film Festival, Illusion Museum, Unique Dining

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Can you spot me in this photo by Eliot Hess? (And check out his other photos this week.) What would Monica and Hillary say to each other if they met? There’s a play about that. I’m thrilled that the Miami Film Festival is back! There’s a new museum on Lincoln Road. Time Out Market is back too and it’s a unique dining experience. And I hope you’ll join me in NYC for the Three Tomatoes Renewal Summit on May 13.

March 3-27. When Monica Met Hillary

Winter Miller, an American playwright and journalist, 43, wrote a play about Hillary Clinton and Monica Lewinsky that has tongues wagging all over Miami. Called “When Monica Met Hillary,” the play is about Monica Lewinsky meeting up with Hillary Clinton three decades later. As far as we know, Monica and Hillary have never met. They never had a conversation. What if they did meet? What would they say to each other?

I’m going to find out on March 12th when a group of us, are going to see the production at the Colony Theater on Lincoln Road. It runs from March 3 to March 27th. I really didn’t want to see the play when I first heard about it because I thought to myself, how much more on this topic do I really want to know? Then I thought about the creative aspect and decided to give it a try. A lot of people could apply this topic to their own lives if they met up with a person that tortured them years ago.

I know what I would do, “pow” right in the kisser. I have been frustrated by this topic ever since it happened. I was upset with the media who gave it so much attention. I couldn’t stand those who thought Monica was so innocent and I had no tolerance for those who didn’t hold Clinton responsible. The thought of them having sex in the Oval Office, which is supposed to have the highest level of national security, just makes me feel like the whole world is a fake. Sorry to ramble on but I have had these feelings ever since I first heard about the encounter of Monica and Clinton. I am hoping that this play will take away some of my resentment. I will let you know.   Get tickets here

March 4-13. Miami Film Festival

I’m keeping my finger crossed that nothing stops the Miami Film Festival from happening this year. We have had so many false starts in the entertainment world for the two years that I am thrilled that this is really going to happen.  Hopefully, this is a sign that we will start living life to the fullest. The thought of people gathering together to enjoy a good movie, on a giant screen, seems like a dream is finally coming true.

Miami really knows how to create a film festival. The 39th edition of the festival, March 4-13, 2022, showcases the work of the world’s best emerging and established filmmakers. I just found out that the cash awards can total more than $100,000 in competition categories.

The festival features in-depth conversations with film legends Pedro Almodovar, Rita Moreno, Riz Ahmed, Aldis Hodge, Javier Camara, Andra Day, Joshua James Richards, ; Radha Blank, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Adele Romanski, and Amy Seimetz.

The festival also hosts dozens of world-class events every year, including the Mercado de Cine Frances y Europeo, which brings together over 40 buyers and sellers from Europe and Latin America; annual events in partnership with VARIETY, including the Oscars International Film Roundtable. There will also be workshops, masterclasses, and industry happy hours.

The in-Person films are screening at MDC’s Tower Theater Miami, Silverspot Cinema, and Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts (Knight Concert Hall).  Learn more.

Good news for those who want to watch the films online. They are available to watch on web browsers, mobile devices and Apple TV, Roku, Android TV via The Eventive App.

Museum of Illusions

Lincoln Road, a walkable 10 block stretch of great shopping and dining in the heart of South Beach, is now home to a museum. Don’t worry. It’s not a stuffy historical one, but rather a fun entertainment center. It’s actuality a Museum of Illusions.

My husband and I went there to check it out and I must say we found ourselves in the world of fantasy and imagination. The Museum of Illusions has 3D Illusions and a “Smash It!” exhibit which is totally exhilarating.

The website explains that the museum has 40+ 3D illusions that produce eye-popping pics, inspired by cartoons, art, current events, movies, and more! “Not just that, our “Smash It!” room can help you blow off steam and let go of what is no longer serving you any good!

“Guests can look forward to flying on the magic carpet, walking on the edge of the skyscraper, or even surviving the lava bridge. And of course, release your tensions by smashing the plates with your stress-filled thoughts.”

The entire museum is a social media happy place. Photography opportunities galore. The museum says “flash photography is not just allowed, it’s encouraged. The Museum of Illusions is the place to be to create memories and let your imagination soar. Created by some of the world’s best artists, the Museum of Illusions is going to be one of the most famous attractions in Miami.”  Get the details.

Get Ready Again for a Unique Dining Experience

The famous Time Out Market is back after the Covid shutdown and offers folks every type of meal they could ever want under one roof. It’s like visiting a major food convention. What’s even more interesting is that the food establishment is going to feature a wide variety of special events. This is just perfect for people who want to go solo, or with a group. Everyone fits in.

Yes, The Time Out Market is an offspring of the 50-year-old media company. They wanted to create a dining and cultural experience that was curated and vetted by their editors. The company explains that “It’s a concept the team at Time Out Portugal created in 2014 and launched inside the city’s historic market, Mercado da Ribeira. It’s 24 restaurants, eight bars, a dozen shops and a high-end music venue—from the best burger and the top steak joint to the best sushi restaurant—Lisbon’s finest eateries are all represented. This unique mix of traditional and trendy is what you’ll only find at Time Out Market Lisbon.”

Now they say, that “Time Out Market Miami picks up the baton and introduces the city to its own version of this tried-and-true concept right in the heart of South Beach. Spread across 17,000 square feet, the curated food hall packs 17 kitchens, three bars, a demo cooking area and a video installation wall that together make up the best dining and culture that Miami has to offer. Like in Lisbon, Miami follows a simple rule when it comes to curation: if it’s good, it goes in the magazine; if it’s great, it goes in the market.”

Other Time Out Markets are located in London, New York, Paris, Chicago, Los Angeles, Lisbon, Hong Kong, Sydney, Melbourne, Porto, Singapore, Barcelona, Madrid, Montréal, and Boston. In Miami:   1601 Drexel Ave, Miami Beach https://www.timeoutmarket.com/miami/
