Miami Life: Important PSA, Cruise Terminal, Swimwear, Earth Month
Did you know that 70% of ovarian cancers are not diagnosed until late stage. Two of my young Mimai friends are a mission to fund research and trials. It’s official. Miami now has the largest cruise terminal in the world, that can serve 36,000 passengers a day. The opening night party of the HistoryMiami Museum’s latest exhibit, “Waves of Style: Swimwear Through the Decades,” is a great way to kick off summer. And the Frost Museum of Science has an exciting series of events to celebrate Earth Month starting on April 19th on Earth Day.
Important Information about Ovarian Cancer
My young Miami friends, Emily and Chris Campbell, started an ovarian cancer nonprofit organization to quickly fund research and trials in order to find a cure. It’s called https://www.nottheseovaries.org/
They have raised approximately $1 1/2 million already and their goal is $10 million. They feel that’s what’s needed to get the job done.
Emily was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 2 1/2 years ago. She and her husband Chris saw first-hand how little ovarian cancer research and treatments are out there, and how painfully slow the diagnosis process can be — even when there’s no time to lose.
That’s why they’re on a mission to change it. Their ovarian cancer nonprofit is working to quickly fund research and trials. At Not These Ovaries, they believe in addressing ALL aspects of the ovarian cancer journey – including the topics many hesitate to discuss.
When co-founder Emily was told she might have ovarian cancer, she and her husband (and co-founder) Chris were lost.
Emily had brought herself to the hospital after weeks of experiencing symptoms and being turned away from different doctors with no clear diagnosis. That was just the beginning of her ovarian cancer journey.
The next weeks consisted of sifting through convoluted medical websites, fighting for timely appointments, navigating antiquated processes, battling medical gaslighting, and even hand-delivering medical specimens to secure second opinions in time to finally get the right diagnosis.
Emily was lucky. They caught her cancer in time, and she had a ridiculously determined partner by her side, who committed himself to going down every possible avenue to ensure Emily had the best possible outcome.
That’s why they’re on a mission to change it.
The facts.
There aren’t many reliable stats about low-grade serous and borderline ovarian cancer. That’s because there hasn’t been enough research. Until now.
- 1 in 78 people with ovaries will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in their lifetime.
- 1 in 10 diagnosed with ovarian cancer is under 45. The chance of them entering remission from chemotherapy is less than 20%. The average survival rate after a low-grade serous ovarian cancer diagnosis is nine years.
- The current treatment options for low-grade serous and borderline ovarian cancer are based on lack of data.
- There is no test for the early detection of ovarian cancer.
- 70% of diagnoses don’t happen until the cancer reaches stage III or IV.
- Many don’t notice ovarian cancer symptoms until the disease is in advanced stages. In most cases, a diagnosis cannot be reached until after surgery.
- Most surgery is exploratory to see how much cancer there is and what kind.
- Most surgeries are done by a general surgeon, not an oncologist gynecologist surgeon, because there are so few.
- The majority of these surgeries result in the removal of one or both ovaries, causing immediate menopause — no matter the age.
Self-advocacy shouldn’t be the only way to survive ovarian cancer.
Medical gaslighting is the #2 cause of ovarian cancer-related deaths. The #1 cause is cancer.
Most women with ovarian cancer don’t get diagnosed until it’s too late because doctors assume their symptoms are just “woman problems.”
In fact, one study published in Academic Emergency Medicine found that women who went to the emergency room with severe stomach pain had to wait for almost 33% longer than men with the same symptoms.
45% of women surveyed didn’t think their healthcare providers took their pain seriously.
And that doesn’t even factor in race or gender identity. Women of color and trans women are statistically less likely to be taken seriously about their symptoms than cis white women.
Funding research and trials shouldn’t take longer than the studies, themselves.
Participating in a drug trial doubles life expectancy.
Patients need more drug trials.
Something needs to change.
Help us change it.
Fund a trial.

Miami Now Has the Largest Cruise Terminal in the World
MSC Cruises has opened the largest cruise terminal in the world at PortMiami. The four-story building shines up at night like a beautiful blue travel monument. The building was built in partnership with the port and Miami-Dade County. It can service 36,000 passengers a day.
The MSC terminal can simultaneously accommodate two ships. Miami-Dade County will be building a third dock by 2028. MSC World America, the Geneva-based company, said the approximate 500,000 square-foot terminal, will also dock cruise ships from its luxury brand Explora Journeys. The terminal was designed by Arquitectonica of Miami and built by Fincantieri Infrastructure. It cost about $450 million.
Here are some new MSC advantages:
Check-in: Cruise passengers can check in from home online using the MSC for Me app or the MSC Cruises website. Upload your travel documents and receive your boarding pass within minutes.
Parking: With over 2,400 spaces, the terminal boasts a six-level garage. Reserve your spot in advance through the app or website.
Drop-off: Conveniently located in the terminal, there’s a covered drop-off zone for buses, taxis, and ride shares. All transport options have a direct covered path leading straight into the terminal.
Luggage: If you need to leave your luggage, there are 42 luggage screening machines available at the drop-off point in the parking garage.
MSC is really changing the cruise industry, one terminal at a time.

The Frost Museum of Science
I always get the feeling that we all walk around totally oblivious to the state of our planet. We go about our business without any thought to what we are doing to destroy the environment. The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Miami wants to wake us all up.
This Earth Month, they are teaming up with environmentalists to celebrate and take action. Join us for a series of exciting events, including our annual Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 19, presented by Florida Power & Light SolarNow, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. The event is also kindly supported by Florida Prepaid College Plans.
