January: Reflections and Projections

As you probably know, January is aptly named for the Roman god Janus. In Roman mythology, Janus was the god of doors, gates, and transitions. He has two faces—one facing the past, and one facing the future. He also represents the middle ground between concrete and abstract dualities including life/death, beginning/end, war/peace, and barbarism/civilization.

So, it seemed to me that this would be a good time for looking back and forwards – asking myself some important questions as I plan for the new year. These are five of the questions that I’m answering that might add clarity to your planning. They are adapted from a questionnaire developed by Terri Hase.

  1. What achievements from 2025 brought you the most satisfaction? Why?
  1. Imagine it’s the end of 2026. What made you most proud and fulfilled?
  1. What aspect of your life (health, spirit, relationships, finance) deserves more attention? How will you achieve this?
  1. Describe your vision of your life in 2026. Be very specific.
  2. What do you envision as your greatest obstacle for the coming year? How will you address it?

Write all this down for regular review during the year. Think about an attractive, small notebook so that you can check back monthly to track your progress, celebrate accomplishments and perhaps add or mark changes.

Here’s to a healthy, happy year full of glorious surprises, friends, family, and laughter!
