How to Use AI as Your Interior Designer

Imagine having a design-savvy partner who never tires of looking at paint chips, rearranging furniture, or refining your color palette. That’s exactly what AI can be—your endlessly patient, visually attuned interior designer. I recently sought advice from AI to help with ideas for transforming my bedroom into a serene, cohesive coastal retreat, using personalized styling, moodboards, and layout advice. Here’s what I did.

Step 1: Upload Your Space

I started by uploading a couple of photos of my room. AI can analyzed the lighting, layout, color clashes, and architectural features to offer tailored suggestions. As you can see my bedroom featured:

  • Soft blue walls
  • Navy bedding
  • A red armchair
  • White dresser and mirror
  • Snowy outdoor view

Step 2: Define Your Desired Vibe

Since my room overlooks the water, I chose Coastal Calm—a look that’s serene, airy, and grounded in natural textures. AI translated that into a refined palette:

  • Base: soft blue walls
  • Neutrals: warm white, cream, natural wood
  • Accent: navy with optional sea-glass or sandy beige

Step 3: Curate a Moodboard

AI then generated a two personalized moodboards using their suggestions and then my actual furniture and layout. It included:

  • White linen curtains
  • Cream and navy pillows
  • Woven textures (baskets, pendant light)
  • Seascape artwork
  • A soft neutral rug layered over the existing blue one

This visual guide helped me see how small changes could create a cohesive, elevated look.

Step 4: Style the Bed Like a Designer

AI recommended layering:

  • Crisp white bedding
  • Navy throw at the foot
  • Cream euro pillows
  • A striped lumbar pillow

This created a boutique-hotel feel without replacing the existing comforter.

Step 5: Balance the Room

To soften vertical lines and add warmth:

  • Linen curtains were added to frame the snowy view
  • A woven basket and wood side table grounded the red chair
  • A larger rug added texture and warmth

Step 6: Style Surfaces Intentionally

AI guided me to:

  • Keep nightstands 70% clear
  • Add a small plant, tray, or stack of books
  • Style the dresser with a tall vase, framed art, and greenery

Step 7: Visualize the Final Look

AI generated a full-room mockup showing how the updated palette, textures, and layout would look in real life.

Why It Works

Using AI for interior design isn’t about replacing your taste—it’s about refining it. You bring the vision; AI brings cohesion, clarity, and creative direction.  And while I stick closer to their ideas using what I have, the suggestions have inspired me to update and make some changes.

Whether you’re styling a bedroom, refreshing a living room, or planning a full home makeover, AI can:

  • Curate color palettes
  • Suggest layouts
  • Style surfaces
  • Create moodboards
  • Guide shopping decisions
  • Visualize your space

Ready to Try It?

Upload a photo, describe your dream vibe, and let AI be your design partner. Whether you want cozy cabin, Parisian chic, or coastal calm, it’s all possible—one smart suggestion at a time.
