Miami Life – Basketball and Science

Editors Note: Our friend Joanne Davis shares a couple of recommendations.

Thanks to the head tomato for asking me to share a couple of fun things I did recently in Miami. I’ve lived here on and off for five years and although a frequent visitor to Hard Rock Stadium and other museums, this was a first time to see Miami Heat and the Science Museum.

Basketball – The Miami Heat

Miami Heat plays in the Kaseya Center. The city has been abuzz because last week Bam Adebayo, the starting center, score 83 points…all by himself…breaking records. The Kaseya Center is the most beautiful and well-appointed arena for sports and concerts. In fact, the night before we saw the Heat host the Orlando Magic team, Lady Gaga and her “The MAYHEM Ball” was at Kaseya.

We started our basketball experience with a visit to Bacardi Ocho Lounge at the arena. The lounge is on the suite level and looks over the basketball court. You can watch the teams warm up while enjoying drinks and tasty food. We opted for Wagu hot dogs – delicious. The comfortable seats in the arena are well padded with enough room for other fans to get to their seats without stepping on your feet. The team introductions were very – pun intended – hot. As the players are announced, bursts of heat flame out. Although Magic won, the game was competitive in the second half with the half time show including announcing Carnival’s Scholarship recipients.

What struck us is how small a basketball court looks versus a football field – fewer players and coaches. If you want to see pro sports in Miami, consider that pro basketball teams play 82 games a regular season while pro football plays 17 – so many more choices…and there are those hot dogs if you upgrade to the Bacardi Ochos Lounge. GET MORE DETAILS.

Science – The Phillip & Patricia Frost Museum of Science

We started our visit with a virtual reality experience – a motion-based VR adventure that put us in the center of dinosaurs including a T.rex fight. In addition to headsets, the chairs vibrated so you felt in the middle of the action.

Next, we saw a temporary exhibit – Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius. We all know him for his art, and there’s a cool exhibit about Mona Lisa, but much more about all of his inventions, including flying machines. Exhibit with a perfect blend of art and science is there until April 5 – so hurry if you want to see it before it goes back to Rome.

We ended up visiting Frost’s three-level aquarium, where you can pet stingrays on the top level and see sharks through glass windows on the lower levels. A wonderful water zoo! The museum also has a planetarium – that’s for another day. GET THE DETAILS.
