Our Long Island reporter, Andrea Peponakins, introduces us to Elyse Richman—a woman who didn’t just build a business, she built a world of color, joy, and community. From launching her first fashion venture at 19 to creating the beloved Shock boutiques and Shock Ice Cream in Westhampton Beach, Elyse has carved her own path with grit, instinct, and unstoppable tenacity. Her story is one of reinvention, resilience, and the kind of entrepreneurial spirit that turns challenges into chapters of triumph. GET THE DETAILS.

Roving in Grand Central

Nicole Freezer Rubens writes:

Tap your new OMNY or credit card and head to Grand Central Station to visit your old MetroCards, turned into magnificent masterpieces! Tucked inside our glorious, landmarked terminal is a satellite gallery of the New York Transit Museum. They just opened “Inspired by MetroCard”, an exhibition of fine artwork that repurposes the little plastic card. This show celebrates the recently retired transit card that replaced the beloved token in 1994.

Through the three decades that the MetroCard was in use, the Transit Authority issued countless mundane, iconic blue and yellow cards. Occasionally, several special-edition art- and culture-inspired collectors’ item cards were offered, many of which are included in the show as artworks and mini time capsules in their own right. Artists such as Nina Boesch, Nina Vishneva, Juan Carlos Pinto and VH McKenzie turned expired everyday objects into works of art, making sculptures, paintings, collages and even the most quintessential New York wedding dress!

“Inspired by MetroCard” is a must-see for New Yorkers. Admission is free and open 7 days a week through October. However, you transport yourself to Grand Central Station, don’t miss this free ride from history to sustainable innovation. If you see something, say something and tell your friends to see it too!

April 8 & 9. Ready to Add a Pop of Spring to Your Wardrobe?

We can’t wait to welcome in spring at Gabrielle Carlson’s next pop up at the magnificent Guerlain Spa at the Waldorf. You’ll find beautiful clothes, in awesome colors and sumptuous fabrics, right off the rack and to order.

April18-19. New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players Close Season with Utopia, Limited

Head to the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College as Gilbert & Sullivan Players wrap their 51st season with a brand‑new, fully staged production of Utopia, Limited, returning to the NYGASP stage for the first time in 15 years. This rarely performed satire—Gilbert & Sullivan’s penultimate work—takes aim at British imperialism, politics, and the Victorian obsession with modernization. When Princess Zara brings English “progress” back to her island home, the kingdom’s attempt to reinvent itself as a corporation spirals into delightful chaos.

Artistic Director James Mills leads the production, calling the operetta “a charming score with hilarious dialogue” that deserves far more attention. Musical Director Joseph Rubin conducts a 27‑piece orchestra performing Sullivan’s original orchestrations.

Performance Schedule:
• Saturday, April 18 at 2 PM & 7:30 PM
• Sunday, April 19 at 3 PM

Tickets start at $30. Visit nygasp.org or call 212‑772‑4448 (Wed–Fri, 12–6 PM).
All patrons 40 and under may purchase any available seat for $30.

April 27. A Powerful Evening at the Actors Temple

The evening will feature twin Holocaust survivors, Henry and Bernie Schanzer, both of whom are 90 years old. They were sent to a death camp at 7 years of age.  Holocaust survivors have such stories to tell us. These true stories are filled with bravery, survival and the true meaning of what life is all about. They help us to understand our own precious lives and what we are capable of. It will be an unforgettable evening to remember “never to forget”!

Program begins at 6:30pm with a Wine and Cheese reception, followed by their talk. Tickets are $36.00 per person, in celebration of their lives.

The ultimate blonde bombshell—and one of Hollywood’s most enduring legends—takes center stage this spring at the Museum of Modern Art. In celebration of what would have been Marilyn Monroe’s 100th year, MoMA is presenting a sweeping new film series, “Marilyn Monroe: Celluloid Dream,” running March 12–25.

This retrospective revisits Monroe’s most unforgettable performances, showcasing the films that shaped her myth and cemented her place in cinematic history. Highlights include:

  • Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Howard Hawks’s dazzling Technicolor musical
  • The Seven Year Itch (1955), Billy Wilder’s iconic comedy featuring the legendary subway‑grate moment
  • The Misfits (1961), Monroe’s final completed film and one of her most emotionally resonant roles

The program also explores Monroe’s lasting influence on contemporary filmmakers, featuring works inspired by her image and mythology—most notably David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, a modern Hollywood fever dream steeped in identity, illusion, and stardom.

MoMA’s series offers a rare opportunity to experience these films on the big screen, where Monroe’s charisma, vulnerability, and star power feel as luminous as ever.
