Spotlight on Long Island Women: Meet Geraldine “Jerry” Leo

Planking Her Way Into 10O”

Every so often, a woman comes along whose spirit seems to laugh in the face of time. Meet Geraldine “Jerry” Leo of Bay Shore, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday in the most extraordinary way — holding a plank for a full five minutes at the Great South Bay YMCA. While many might mark such a milestone with a quiet cake and candles, Jerry chose to show the world that age truly is just a number. Her story is a living, breathing testament to strength, determination, and joy in every season of life.

Jerry is no stranger to pushing her limits. She still works out three times a week at the YMCA, curling weights, crunching, and — yes — planking (a core-strength exercise where you hold your body straight like the top of a push-up, supported by your forearms and toes) better than most people a quarter of her age. When asked about her secret to longevity, Jerry beams and says, “Don’t give up. Keep moving. Keep laughing.”

Her words are as inspiring as her actions. At her birthday celebration, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow fitness classmates, Jerry didn’t just show off her muscles — she showed off her mindset. She reminded everyone watching that our golden years don’t have to be about slowing down; they can be about showing up.

Jerry’s story is not just about fitness; it’s about resilience, hope, and spirit. “Every day is a gift,” she shared with reporters, adding that she chooses to spend hers moving, learning, and connecting. She is a living example of how purpose and positivity can carry us through every chapter of life.

For women on Long Island — and beyond — Jerry Leo is more than a centenarian; she is a role model. At 100, she is still proving what’s possible when you mix determination with joy. Her message to all of us, especially women over 55, is crystal clear: Don’t let age define what you can or cannot do.

As we spotlight Jerry, let her story serve as encouragement to lace up your sneakers, pick up those weights, try that yoga class, or simply take a walk with a smile. Jerry reminds us that vitality isn’t measured in years, but in the courage to keep showing up. And in doing so, she’s planked her way right into our hearts.
