The Sudden Acceleration Problem:
How to Safely Stop Your Car
Jan Bina our co-host on Tomatoes in the Trenches tried out the advice from auto expert Lauren Fix on her Prius and it works. You can test this in your driveway or an empty parking lot.
“I took Lauren's advice yesterday about how to control your car if sudden acceleration should occur and tested it on my Prius. It works. Now, mind you I wasn't flying 90 miles an hour down the freeway, but rather going 35 on a somewhat deserted residential street. But it is simple to do and immediately puts the car in coast mode.
You can do this on ANY car, but here is how it works on the Prius. You just move the gear knob straight across to the left. Your dashboard gear display will confirm you are in neutral and then you brake. On the Prius the sequence of events (should there by sudden acceleration) is logical. Hit the flashers (the red triangle near the button to turn on the radio), put the car in neutral and then apply the brakes - do not pump the brakes. As Lauren said, a last resort is to turn off the engine because this will make the car harder to control. If you do decide turn it off, push the button down for 5 seconds - again don't pump the button. I feel very relieved. I can love my Prius again and not be afraid to drive it.”
