Cabaret, Mystery Giveaway; Getaways; Movies and More....

Ellen Kaye
Ellen Kaye

One of the many great things about NYC is all the wonderful opportunities to experience intimate cabaret performances in wonderful venues all around the city. This week we had a chance to visit the recently renovated Metropolitan Room with the wonderfully entertaining blues/jazz singer Ellen Kaye and a terrific band that includes sax player Claire Daily, with a great range of songs by Annie Lennox, Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Gershwin. You can catch her next show at the Metropolitan Room on Wed. Feb. 29.  Get more cabaret happenings from our cabaret gal about town, Sandi Durell. And speaking of great music, we were so sad to hear of the passing of Etta James.  We've posted the video clip of Christina Aguilera singing At Last at Etta's funeral...wonderful rendition and tribute to a great jazz singer.

And if you love mysteries, we've got the first four books in the Dorothy Parker mystery series that one lucky tomato will win.  Plus we've got a romantic getaway idea, laughing yoga, a movie recommendation and more. Get the highlights below.  And if you missed some of our latest postings this week, like the Tuscan turkey recipe, Valerie Smaldone's review of Wit, Liz Smith's advice to Demi, and lots more, check out the sidebar. And by the way, the fabulous Liz turned 89 last week.  Leave her a birthday note in the comments section of her latest posting.

midnightWin the Dorothy Parker Mystery Series. Mr. Tomato, a big fan of this series by Agata Stanford, recently reviewed the fourth in the series, Death Rides the Midnight Train.  Enter for a chance to win the first four books in print or e-book versions.

san franA Romantic Valentine's Day Stay in San Francisco. If you're looking for a quick romantic getaway, the Travelling Professor suggests San Francisco.  He writes, "With an unexpected break in my schedule, I decided to give both myself and my significant other a Valentine's gift - a quick 2-night stay in San Francisco.  February is a good time for a spontaneous trip.  Air travel is at a lull and some great fares can be found.  It's a quiet period for hotels with the absence of business travelers, conventions, and vacationers.   Room rates are often slashed and it's a time of year that I seem to get more room upgrades and other perks from desk clerks upon check-in." big miracleMovies, Laughing Yoga, Oyster Happy Hour. One of our favorite 3T contributors, Rev. Laurie Sue is raving about Drew Barrymore's new movie "Big Miracle", which she says is a must see. This movie captures the inspirational true story of the rescue of three trapped whales and shows how people from divergent groups can come together for a common good intention of rescuing them.  Watch the trailer.

And Unearth your mirth on Tuesday Feb. 7 with Francine Shore's Laughing Yoga Salon, for only $5. Get the details.

Love Oysters? Then head to Oyster Happy Hour at Barbounia on 20th Street in NYC. Get the details.

Enjoy the weekend.
