4 Reasons to Love NYC in August August is the month when New Yorker's flee the city in droves to enjoy the last days of summer. Everything is just a little less crowded. Restaurant reservations are easier to come by, not to mention that Restaurant Week continues this month. Cabs are there the second you put out your hand, and there are all kinds of fun events happening around town. So if you're not migrating out of Gotham on jitneys, trains, planes, and boats, or if you're thinking about visiting us, there's no shortage of fun, including dumpster diving on Park Avenue, and noon'ers in Bryant Park. Here are 4 reasons to hang around in August.
Reason #1: Discover new talent and shows August 13-29 at FringeNYC, the international multi-arts performing festival, the largest in North America. You'll find a choice of over 200 performing companies selected from all over the world appearing in more than 20 venues around the city. It's a great chance to discover performers and shows that sometimes even make it to Broadway. Tickets to shows are only $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Details at 3T Events. Two of the "not to be missed" shows that were selected for this year's festival, just happen to be produced and/or performed by Tomatoes.
Jen and Liz in Love, is a beautifully written, poignant yet funny one act play that explores the relationship of two long -time friends and what happens when their real feelings for each other explode to the surface one late afternoon as the county fair is closing down. Tomato contributor Helene Galek co-produced and performs in this show. Get the details.
And Tomatoes are raving about Faye Lane's Beauty Shop Stories. The heart-felt show chronicles the hilarious memories of a starry-eyed Texas girl in a blend of story and song. New York Magazine said "They were howling, crying, falling in love with her." Get the details.
Dumpster Pool | Reason #2: Dumpster Diving and more
On Summer Streets 2010. Yes, Tomatoes, there will be dumpster diving on Park Avenue on three consecutive Saturdays, starting today, and August 14, & 21st. Brand new dumpsters (thankfully) have been turned into swimming pools and will be set up at Park Avenue and 40th Street. And while you may not want to stand in line to dive in (much less bare your body to the Grand Central crowd) you are so going to want to witness this. And there's lots more happening along Park Avenue as connecting streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park are closed to motor vehicles to make way for activities for all. Get the details at 3T Events.
Get the cabaret scoop from Sandi Durell | Reason #3: Cabaret is alive and well in AugustAnd of course the NYC cabaret scene is always vibrant. Get the scoop from our reviewer Sandi Durell at Cabaret Connections. And we'd like to add, if you're in New York today, August 7, get tickets right this second to see the fabulous jazz singer Jo Thompson and her orchestra at the Metropolitan Room in her tribute show to Lena Horn. The show starts at 7PM. Jo was a guest this week on our radio show. Listen in from our home page, and you'll hear a little of her music, and some great stories she shared from her early days performing in nightclubs in Havana, NYC, and around the world.
Broadway noon'ers. | Reason #4: Catch the last Broadway Performances at Bryant ParkThursday August 12th you can hear free performances from the casts of Mamma Mia, La Cage Aux Folles, and more. Details at 3T Events. Who needs to go anywhere else? The Three Tomatoes
