Let Freedom Ring!
Early 1900 post card |
Dear Tomatoes, We hope you are all enjoying a fabulous long weekend, and not spending too much time sneaking peaks at your email, ours excepted of course! And do enjoy a little guilt-free consuming of 1 or 2 of the 150 million hot dogs that will be eaten this weekend, and relaxing with friends and family. And then pause for just a minute, to think about these three powerful words, "Let Freedom Ring", and honor all those who came before us and all those who today defend not only our freedoms every day, but defend the right to freedom from tyranny and oppression for people the world over. We thought you might enjoy some notable Fourth of July quotes, and a little Fourth Trivia too. Enjoy! Notable July Fourth Quotes
President Roosevelt, July 4, 1941 | "In 1776 we waged war in behalf of the great principle that government should derive its just powers from the consent of the governed. In other words, representation chosen in free election. In the century and a half that followed, this cause of human freedom swept across the world.
But now, in our generation in the past few years a new resistance, in the form of several new practices of tyranny, has been making such headway that the fundamentals of 1776 are being struck down abroad and definitely, they are threatened here."
President Harry Truman, July 4, 1945 |
"This year, the men and women of our armed forces, and many civilians as well, are celebrating the anniversary of American Independence in other countries throughout the world. Citizens of these other lands will understand what we celebrate and why, for freedom is dear to the hearts of all men everywhere. In other lands, others will join us in honoring our declaration that all men are created equal and are endowed with certain inalienable rights--life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Here at home, let us honor our Nation's creed of liberty, and the men and women of our armed forces who are carrying this creed with them throughout the world."
4th stanza of The Star Spangled Banner |
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand between their loved homes and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner forever shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Erma Bombeck | "You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism."
July 4th Trivia Three America presidents have died on the 4th of July. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826 -- the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Five years later, our fifth president, James Monroe died. Here's to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Long live America!
