Love came into our inbox. A few weeks okay we shared with all of you the devastating loss of our beautiful chocolate lab, Buck. The outpouring of sympathy from Tomatoes was overwhelming. But even in our sorrow, we knew that eventually another dog would be part of our lives again. We just didn't expect him quite so soon. We're weren't really looking yet, but last week we opened our email and there he was. In fact, you might have seen his picture in last Thursday's newsletter when he was still looking for a home.
Bascom with his Mommy - it was love at first sight! |
You see he's a little rescue dog, who was brought to NYC this past weekend by a wonderful group called Unleashed that has an innovative program that brings girls and dogs together. One of our Tomato subscribers who is involved with this terrific group had sent an email about an upcoming benefit for Unleashed, along with the photo of the most adorable 8 week old white/yellow lab puppy. There was his little face looking right at us, and we were instantly in love! Call it fate, call it Kismet, but as so often happens, love finds you when you least expect it. And if his face wasn't enough to make you fall in love, here's his story.
At 5 weeks old, he walked into an animal shelter in South Carolina - on his own. For three weeks, he lived there with no Mommy and no sibblings to comfort him. But the humans at the shelter fell in love with him too, and obvisouly took very good care of the little guy, because he is very loving, healthy, and not timid at all. Last weekend he was driven from South Carolina to New York City - along with 4 adorable boarder collie/shepard puppy siblings who are in need of homes too.
We adopted our little guy on Sunday. His name is Bascom, an old English name of one of our southern uncles. He's as sweet and adorable as can be. We're now sleep deprived and cleaning up puppy "accidents", but the joy of that sweet little face, and puppy kisses makes it all worth while. And if you're in NYC on July 13, please think about attending a fundraising benefit for Unleashed. You'll find out more about their terrific program and who knows? Maybe love will find you when you least expect it. And since we're on the subject of dogs, we've got more doggie items this week. Read on.
Dogs hanging out in NYC |
New York City is for the Dogs
We're always amazed when out of towners are amazed at the number of dogs on the streets of NYC - dogs of every shape, size and breed. Here are some factoids: there are over 1.4 million dogs in New York City living with over 500,000 dog owners. Thank goodness for those pooper scooper laws! But we are a very dog friendly city, with swimming holes, dog runs, dog friendly hotels and restaurants, condos and co-ops, dog chauffer services and more. Check out our NYC Guide for Dogs, whether you live here with your pup, or just want to visit with your pup. We've got the scoop.
Funny Lady Leighann Lord |
The Well-Trained HumansFunny lady Leighann Lord is a dog lover too, and has figured out, like so many of us, that the dog's the one in charge of her household. "Cocker Spaniels seem to have a regal bearing. I realize now I may have been confusing regal with commanding. By any measure, my Little Furry Guy's in charge. In me, my Husband and my Parents he has four very well trained humans at his beck and call, not to mention an extended staff of groomers, veterinarians, and well wishers. I guess Rolie's entourage is really Rolie's Army." Read more.
Excuse us now, we have to rescue a flip flop from the little whirlwind of energy who is hell bent on destruction.

you're a bit suspect of people who "aren't dog people." Okay, so that doesn't make them serial killers, but...

Liz Smith has a terrific column today on the new society scene, her crush on Prince Henry, and what she thinks of burqa's as fashion trends. We couldn't agree more. Get the scoop.
