Top Kitchen Gadgets, Buying Organic, and Growing your own We're in the kitchen today tomatoes, and we love kitchen gadgets that make life easier and so much more fun. We're sharing out top favorites and those of some our friends too. And while we're in the kitchen, we have a great article this week that demystifies organic foods. And then of course, you can always grow some of your own pesticide-free food, even in NYC. Our urban gardener is back with some tips for beginners. And speaking of food which we have in abundance in our country, the people of Zimbabwe, are not so fortunate and desperately need our help. Read on.
From Breadbasket to Basket Case Janice Ashby, the founder of the non-profit Eco Africa Social Ventures, was our guest yesterday on Tomatoes in the Trenches. She has been helping a community of women crafters and their families in Zimbabwe for the past several years who have been devastated by that country's economic catastrophe. If you missed the show, please listen in at your leisure from our home page. And please take 2 minutes to watch a moving and inspiring video that we've posted at 3T.TV that documents Zimbabwe's descent and how a $2.00 a month donation can provide a job and food for a family four.
4th burner pot | The Best Kitchen Gadgets When we decided to do an article on our favorite kitchen gadegts, we had to consult with our friend MarkCharles Misilli, whom we've know since he was a little boy. For the past eight years, MarkCharles has served as the "gadget expert "on QVC with his Kitchen Innovations with MarkCharles Misilli show. Since we already love so many of the products he recommends, it was no surprise, that many of our picks were also on his list too. We especially love his very own innovative product, the Ultimate 4th Burner Pot, designed specifically for that little burner on your stove that rarely gets used. And while we were asking friends, we asked our favorite restaurant critic, Gael Greene for her picks(we're still laughing) and Lynn Scofield who runs the William Henry Miller Inn, a bed and breakfast in Ithica. Check out our favorites, and add your own too.
Dr. Dolgoff | When to buy organic Since we're focused on the kitchen today, let's talk about food and that often confusing word "organic". What does it really mean besides "more expensive"? Well this week Dr. Joanna Dolgoff, our weight loss and nutrition expert, has one of the best articles we've read on this topic. Not only does she explain what really is organic, she has a terrific guide to which fruits and vegetables you should always buy "organic", like peaches, strawberries, and apples, versus onions and sweet corn, that are naturally lower in pesticides. This is a must read!
Valerie Block on her terrace jungle | Grow your own organic veggies What better way to make sure what you're eating is free of bad stuff than growing it yourself? Our urban gardener extraordinaire, Valerie Block, is back this week with advice for beginners. And if you don't have outdoor space, you can still have an in-door herb garden. Read on.
