June 1 2010
Green Thumbs. Plus MAD MENS'S Bryan Batt is in the house! June is busting out all over, as the song goes. And we're busting to tell you about this week's guest on Tomatoes in the Trenches -- the amazing Bryan Batt who stars in the critically acclaimed and award winning series MAD MEN. And like many tomatoes in the Northeast, we did a lot of planting over this long weekend, including our first ever square foot vegetable garden. We're so excited. And while our little garden is planted in the burbs, urban gardens are popping up everywhere too, and we just happen to know the queen of urban gardens and she's got some great advice. Plus we've got some fun gardening items (and clothes too) to share this week, like the mouse watering can and the funky chickens, plus the best garden web site for beginners like us. Here's the dirt.
Bryan Batt as Sal in Mad Men |
Bryan Batt is in the House
The amazing Bryan Batt who starred for three seasons as "Salvatore Romano", Sterling Cooper's art director and closeted gay man in the criticically acclaimed and award winning series MAD MEN is our radio show guest this week. This multi talented actor, writer, and designer whose on and off Broadway credits include such hits as Beauty and the Beast, Starlight Express, and Cats will be talking to the Tomatoes about Mad Men and his new book, "She Ain't Heavy, She's My Mother," a funny, moving and vivid tribute to his "strong-willed steel magnolia" of a mother. You are invited to join us from your house and visit with the wonderful and multi-gifted Bryan Batt live this Wednesday 1PM EST. Or on demand at your leisure.
Valerie Block on her NYC terrace garden |
NYC's Urban Gardener is Back
Last summer we introduced you to urban gardener extraordinaire, Valerie Block. She and her husband have been urban gardening right smack in the middle of Manhattan for over five years now and we're not talking a few little flower pots. Their apartment has a large terrace and every summer they grow several varieties of heirloom tomatoes, bell peppers of various hues, Japanese eggplants, Italian herbs, strawberries and more. Read her article on getting started, and then follow her weekly blog which includes where to buy your supplies in NYC, and her secrets and tips for your very own city garden. Green Thumbs and Square FeetWe've never been "gardening" people although we have always been in awe of those who are. Over the years our indoor plants have mostly been replaced with silks which will give you an idea of the color of our thumbs. But for years we've planted flowers in the summer, a few herbs and 3 tomatoes plants which excite us to no end when we harvest them. And like most Tomatoes, we've been increasingly draw to our local farms for fresh produce and the thought of our own vegetable garden has been like the call of the sirens. But it always seemed like a daunting task, at least for rank beginners, until we started to read about square foot gardening and discovered the best garden web site that sells just about everything related to gardening, but they also have simple step by step instructions for starting a garden, a great interactive garden planning application and a vegetable and plant encyclopedia too. Perfect for beginner vegetable gardeners like us. Get the details.
The Perfect Gardening ShirtOkay, so we know this is a far cry from last week's Sex and the City fashion highlights, but even Carrie would approve of this shirt if she got into gardening. Light weight, moisture wicking, and built- in 50+ sun protection. Details at 3T Shopping. And that's the dirt for today tomatoes.
Cheers,
The Three Tomatoes
