Here's to you Buck! Plus, Women Who Make a Difference.
A tomato's best friend
buck and me
We didn't think we could write about this today, but here goes. We lost our beautiful chocolate Labrador retriever last week.  He was only 10.  He had cancer.  We loved him more than words can say. We miss him terribly - the walks, the licks, the huge greetings whenever we  returned home(10 minutes later), his silky ears, and his unwavering companionship. We could all learn a lot from our dogs, and we certainly learned a lot from Buck - like unconditional love, unflinching loyalty, and that even when life throws you a really bad curve ball, don't whine and keep your tail wagging to the end. Here's a big martini toast to you Buck - thanks for all the love and everything you taught us!

Speaking of martini toasts, we found the funniest video that helped cheer us up this week, thanks to our great friends at In The Trenches Productions, who have it posted on their fabulous online entertainment network for women over 40!  They also are our co-hosts on Tomatoes in the Trenches. If you missed this week's show, listen in on demand from our home page. We gabbed about Sarah Ferguson, Jessie James, and the 100th anniversary of the bra. And we've got a couple of great articles this week about women who are making a difference.  Comic Leighann Lord just returned from Haiti, and entrepreneur Liz Hamburg just returned from a conference on micro financing for women in the U.S.  So read on tomatoes.

mid life
Meet the Midlife Gals We think martinis (one but never three) and midlife go hand in hand, a philosophy shared by the Midlife Gals, whose sage advice includes " it's okay to love/hate your elders, your teenage children, one of your siblings or the grocery store cashier." Checkout this cautionary tale of three too many martinis when the Midlife Gals pay tribute to the "Ancient One."  We're still laughing. Thanks for cheering us up gals!

Speaking of Cheer
Funny Lady Leighann Lord has been spreading cheer this year in Iraq and most recently in Haiti. She writes, "You're going where?" my parents said. They had confused and weary expressions on their faces when I told them I was going on a short (three-day) tour with Armed Forces Entertainment to perform for the troops doing humanitarian work in Haiti. Several questions brewed on their brows: Didn't you just get home from Iraq? Can't you just tell jokes in seedy night clubs like a normal comedian? Do we still have the authority to ground you? Yes, no and no."  Don't miss Leighann's funny and poignant article this week, which is a reminder of how much suffering the Haitian people (and pets too) are still going through.

Micro financing hits home

Many tomatoes are well aware of the success stories of how loaning small amounts of money to women in third world countries (micro financing) to help them start businesses, has empowered these women and  totally transformed their communities. But for some reason, this concept has not been applied here in the U.S. -  until recently.  Liz Hamburg has just returned from moderating a panel at the Microfinance USA 2010 conference in San Francisco and says it was so energizing to see what is happening with microfinance in this country, like the Women's Iniatiative in the Bay Area that provides training courses, mentoring and loans to high potential low income women who want to start or expand their businesses. Their results are amazing.  Read on.

Here's to you Bucky!  RIP.
