Affordable Opera in an Intimate Setting
We just recently heard about the
Amore Opera Company, and were delighted to have the chance to interview the very charming Nathan Hull, a baritone for many years with the former Amato Opera Company. Nathan who is now President and Artistic Director of Amore, remembers the sad day last spring when 89 year old founder Anthony Amato announced he was closing the doors of Amato Opera after 61 years. But Nathan, like most of those involved in the company, some of whom had been performing there for 40 years out of sheer love, were determined that the company should live on. So they banded together, and created a new company, Amore Opera, and found a new home in the 100+ year old Connelly Theater in the East Village. And thanks to the Mr. Amato's donation of costumes and sets for 30 productions, and successful fundraising efforts, they opened the doors this past December with a full production of
La Boehme.

Nathan Hull, who by day is an NYU computer science professor, is passionate when he talks about his love of opera and the company's mission to bring affordable opera to families -- especially to introduce this classical music to our children, who unfortunately live in today's environment where arts are being eliminated from many school programs. Amore has a wonderful family program called "Opera in Brief" that offers matinee performances like this month's shows of Gilbert and Sullivan's well-known comedic operetta, "
H.M.S. Pinafore". Tickets are $15. Another important effort is the opportunity the theater company brings to aspiring young opera singers to perform in a fully staged production alongside seasoned performers. Amore Opera will end its debut season this month with a fully staged production of "
The Magic Flute." Tickets are $35 ($30 for seniors and students). We're getting our tickets now. Get more details on performances and tickets at

The North Fork of Long Island - a Perfect Day Trip or weekend getaway
Yes, we know there are those of you who just can't get enough of the Hamptons, and don't shoot us, but we much prefer the
North Fork of Long Island - quaint villages, charming bed and breakfast inns, farms, vineyards, antiquing and so much more. And if you really want to get away, head to Greenport at the end of the Northfork, roam around this charming little town and enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants on water, and then grab the 10 minute ferry ride to Shelter Island. This time of the year is perfect, before the summer season craziness starts. And one of our tomato subscribers is raving about a second generation restaurant on Shelter Island called
Sweet Tomatoes! How perfect is that? Get more details about Shelter Island at
