New at the movies: the Informers If you're looking for a feel good, pick me up movie, this is definitely not it. This deeply disturbing movie features a great ensemble cast including Billy Bob Thornton, Mickey Rourke, and Kim Bassinger, but not one likeable character. "There is No Sun", the last line spoken in The Informers, aptly sums up this film which dissects contemporary American society, a culture in which too much is never enough. It's set in Los Angeles of the early 1980's with a multi-strand narrative and a vast array of characters who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman, an amoral ex-con). Remember the Manhattan Transfer?
One of our favorite groups in the 70s. Laurel Masse, one of the founding members of the Grammy award-winning vocal group, will be performing at Birdland on Monday night, April 27th. The Chicago Tribute has called her one of the best jazz vocalists.
Have a great weekend,
