White On
Why wait for Memorial Day to wear white pants? As soon as the temperature rises, I like to slip into a pair of white jeans with a T-shirt and neutral blazer—black, brown or beige.

Designers are showing jeans and trousers in a medley of shapes, from skinny to flares and for good reason. White pants are wonderful in warmer weather. They look so fresh and cool that I live in them from May to October.

However, I know just thinking of white on bottom strikes fear and trepidation in the heart of many of you.

And yes, if they are not worn in the proper manner and fit, they can make you look heavier... and/or indecent (when too thin and/or worn with the wrong undergarments).

No matter what your size or shape, you can wear white pants with confidence by following these easy tips:

  • Make sure they fit perfectly. They should skim your body but never hug it very closely. Consult a tailor if the fit is less than perfect.

  • Wear nude underwear. Avoid visible panty lines by wearing a thong or thigh-length Spanx (if you need the holding power).

  • Select opaque fabrics for city wear. Save sheerer linen or gauze for the beach.

  • Avoid sleeveless, V-neck or halter tops if your body shape is triangular. They'll only make your top half appear narrower. Instead, select tops with sleeves and a crew, bateau or scoop neck, which visually balance your body.

  • Layer your tops. Throw a sheer tunic or lightweight jacket over a tank top or tee shirt for more coverage.

  • Accessorize white with gold or silver shoes and jewelry. Or pair it with brights.

  • Look taller and slimmer by keeping your entire outfit monochromatic. Mix different tones and textures of ivory, cream, ecru and white for a sophisticated and lean line.

  • Try a dark or bright top only if your hips are narrower than your shoulders or it covers the hips.
