The Eyes Have It.
Tomatoes test and review some of the new mascaras.
One of our reviewers went to Sephora looking for a mascara and the woman asked “Do you like it long, or think?” The reviewer, somewhat taken aback, thought, who would ask such a question? And…why can’t I have both? Isn’t that the quest for all womankind? Then the saleswoman shed some light on why she asked and gave our reviewer a few tips tip for choosing mascara. Ahhhh…got it. A more liquid mascara will give you longer lashes and a thicker liquid will give you thicker lashes. Also, when applying mascara, start at the base near the roots and zig zag to avoid clumps. Our testers tried various new products on the market and the #1 top seller at Sephora, and sent us their before and after photos too. See for yourself. If you’ve tried any of these new mascaras, give us your rating and post your own review at the end.
Maybelline The Colossal Volum' Express
The mascara we can’t stop seeing on TV. Seems it is
everywhere promoting its collagen formula plumping
lashes one-by-one. Available at Rite Aid and other
retailers for about $7.99. It says that it increases your lash volume by 9x in one stroke, without clumping. Our tester used two coats (which it says "do not allow to dry between coats). The lashes looked pretty good – we’re not sure about 9x...but longer and thicker. 3T Tip: It does to start to clump if you don't work fast with your coats. Also, if it does dry and you do put on a third coat... it definitely starts to clump. Would you recommend to a friend? YES.
Loreal Double Extend Beauty Tube
Available available at local retailers for $10.95. This is a two step process. First you apply the base coat of white primer, then you apply the tube lash which claims to create tubes around your lashes that will lengthen and will not smudge, clump and will stay on all day. Indeed, with two coats our tester said it lasted all day without flaking. 3T tip: read the box about removal (this is hard considering tomatoes rarely follow directions). It does come off easily with just water, but there is a special way to remove the mascara and it looks as if you eyelashes have all fallen out, so users need to be aware of this. Would you recommend to a friend? YES.
Spinlash by Akasha (As seen on TV)
This battery operated mascara actually has a revolving brush
that rotates 360 degrees. The big claim is that it removes
clumps. 2 mascaras and 2 brushes are availabe for $30
Target stores. Our tester used 2 coats and had it on 14 hours.
She said it was still almost as good as when she applied it.
Would you recommend to a friend? YES.
Dior Dior Show
The 2008 winner of Best of Sephora, this mascara claims to give
cat-walk length lashes. The brush is super long. Available for
$24 at Sephora. Our tester used one coat and found the lashes
got very long. The brush is very long, but because of that it was
harder to get into the corner of the eyes. That said, we
understand why this is a cult favorite. Would you recommend to
a friend? YES.
Givenchy Phenomen'Eyes Mascara
Exclusively at Sephora, it has the most different brush on
the market. It is designed to curl, separate and give a fanned
effect. Cost $27. Our tester found the short wand very easy
to use and can get the small lashes close to the nose and
on the bottom lid without smudging. It did give a very nice
fanned effect and lasted a long time. However, it was difficult
to remove and required several times with an eye makeup
remover solution. Would you recommend to a friend? Yes, with the caveat that it is pricey.
