Are you In The Know about the Partners Jacket?
Yes my dear Tomatoes the boyfriend jacket from the 80’s is back in style…….but that doesn’t mean you can pull out your old Donna Karan or DKNY jacket that you have kept in your closet for all these years. The shoulders have changed; the width of the sleeves have changed; the body is slightly more shaped and let’s be honest our bodies have changed!
I remember when the DKNY Collection was launched at Saks Fifth Avenue….and the hottest item was the boyfriend jacket in a black/navy cool wool and menswear patterns in mini checks and thin pinstripes. We could not keep them in stock and they retailed for $300 and $400…… back in the eighties. It was a very exciting time in fashion because it was the beginning of a new way to dress with a casual chic attitude. How you layered your outfit was key to “the look” which resulted in huge multiple sales and a business that boomed for years

The 2009 version which I have named the Partners Jacket is key to your fall wardrobe! It is very chic and extremely comfortable. The key components to the purchase are the quality of the fabric, the fit and the make. There is nothing worse than a jacket that doesn’t fit well……..it can not only ruin your look but your image too….and every Tomato needs to maintain their fabulous image! This jacket will be in almost every collection, at every specialty store, and at every price point. It will look great in a myriad of colors and fabrics but at the top of every Tomatoes list should be a fabulous color as in a honey yellow, Jackie O hot pink, real red, new blues from teal to midnight, and purples….yes they are still important. Rich neutrals are best in grays from soft grays to gunmetal, and creamy beiges and whites (“crème brulee”) to deep sienna browns…… and always a rich black. Textured fabrics and velvets are great for grays, whites, bronze and new neutrals. It is very important to know how to put your outfit together….so Tomatoes if you follow these guidelines you may have Bill Cunningham taking your picture on 57th and fifth……pretend you don’t see him….just look fabulous! Fabric……fit……and tailoring will create the noise….invest in a Partner’s Jacket that flatters your girlish figure.
Make sure you have a little room to layer a thin sweater but don’t wear it as big as you did in the 80’s….remember it is 2009!
Wear it with a narrow leg pant which again you will be able to find in any collection and at every price point. My recommendation for every Tomato is to invest in a pair of Piazza Sempione cool wool, gabardine or flannel side zip slim leg pants. These pants are an investment that will probably outlive you….they are the greatest ! Yes they are very expensive….$390-$445 (fall prices) for a pair of the best fitting pants you will ever own. And the name of the pant is The Audrey…..capito? They are great to wear with tunic looks and are very feminine. These pants are not meant to be worn with something tucked inside of them. You can find them at Nordstrom’s, Neiman Marcus, Saks, Bergdorf’s and Barneys. There are certain body types with elongated torso’s or pear shapes that may not find them flattering but try them on for size. They are Italian (perfetto) and usually come up to size 50 /size 16 (especially at Saks).
