Want to update your wardrobe, but the recession is putting a squeeze on your style budget ? Then you need to get creative about where you shop. If you’ve exhausted all the designer outlet stores and your favorite bargain basement shops,  then here are 5 fresh new ideas for where to find clothes for less.

1)Fashion Swap Party
We all have clothes sitting in our own closets we’ve barely worn, but don’t know what to do with. Why not organize a swap party where a bunch of your (similarly sized) friends bring a bag full of the clothes they no longer love, enjoy some cocktails, and take turns picking through each other’s goodies. Susan may have a designer sweater her husband gave her that is just not her color, but she hasn’t the heart to tell him, let alone return it. Carol may have a fabulous suit she never gets to wear anymore now she is out of the corporate world.  One woman’s junk can be another woman’s treasure.

2)Upscale Consignment Shops
We all know how well to do fashionistas and socialites never like to be seen wearing the same thing more than a few times. Chances are you’ll score some very high quality, fashion forward pieces that they’ve fallen out of love with, but are real finds, at consignment shops in wealthy neighborhoods! Shop at consignment stores early  and often, as upscale fashionistas like to clean their closet out at the start of very season.

3)Yard Sales in High End Neighborhoods
Sometimes it’s just too much bother (and not enough financial return) for wealthy women to trudge off to the consignment shop with the clothes they’re just plain tired of, so instead, they sell them from home. Why not scan the newspaper for neighborhood garage sales in posh areas of town ? A yard sale is one of the best places to pick up an incredible designer outfit for at an unbelievable steal.

4)Your Daughter’s Closet
If your daughter and you are lucky enough to be the same size, take advantage of the fact. We’re not advising you to dress like a teenager, but she likely has a few fashionable items to borrow that would cross over just fine. Love that cute empire dress, but know it’s too short to be age appropriate? Then add a pair of leggings and flats for a casual weekend look that is all grown up. Find she hardly wears that cute black flats  because she’s happier in heels, then why let them waste away in the closet when they could look terrific on your tootsies.

5)Accessory Rentals
If you can’t afford to buy, why don’t you just rent? Online accessory rentals that range from purses, to sunglasses to belts, jewelry and just about anything, are huge. With ever-changing styles, you can have the “it” bag each season without paying through the nose. And if you really fall in love with it, there is usually the option to buy.
