6 Skills You Need to Build a Stylish Wardrobe

You can’t really ever have a chat about dressing with out admitting that we never feel satisfied with our wardrobe. However, if you stop to think about how most of us go about shopping, many of us have the consistently self-sabotaging habit of:

Buying too many of the same boring items, like jeans or shirts.
Just going out shopping for fun (no plan or forethought)
Often coming home with things that are black, grey or a combination of both
Only buying things that are on sale. (Would your really buy that item if it was full price?)

So how do you change this pattern?  What can you do to start upping your style, especially now that you are 40 or older?
Here are a few fashion tips on what super stylish women do to build a stylish wardrobe!

1.  Have a role model.  This can be tough when you are over 40 because there are not that many out there.  If you can find someone that has a similar body type, great! Most of all, you want that person top of mind when you go shopping. When you go to buy something you can say to yourself, “Would____ buy this?” If the answer is, no, then pass on your purchase.

2.  Keep a small notebook with you.  This is the fastest way to get inspired. Start noticing women on the street that catch your eye.  What is it about an outfit that makes this woman stand out?  Is it the style or color of her handbag?  Is her hairstyle one that would look good on you?  Jot down any and all things that get your heart beating!  Window shop, look at mannequins, even co-workers. Don’t be afraid to go up and ask them where they shop or get their hair done! You will make their day!

3. Shoes first.  Choose your outfit for the day by picking out the shoes first.  Do you have a sassy pair that have been collecting dust?  Get them out and put them on!  Do you have something to wear with them?  If not, take them out to the store and let them be your inspiration!

4. Don't shop with a friend.  Many times we shop with a friend and they end up talking us into buying things we wish we hadn't. Instead, try these tips on your own and see if you can stay focused and buy something that you really love and adore.

5. Wear something nice while shopping. Never, ever go shopping when you feel like a frump.  We promise you will not come home with a wonderful outfit and the sales girls will most likely ignore you.  Setting the bar is important and will help you make a good choice.  If you like what you are going to buy as much or better than what you are wearing then you will be making the right purchasing decision, not to mention you will get better service if you dress nicely.

6. Educate yourself.  The fact that you are reading this article is the first step in finding your "Wow" style.   Reading style blogs are a great way to keeping  you up to date and aware of what is out there.
