On April 1, 2009 tomatoes joined us for a amazing evening with Phoebe Snow at Etcetera Etcetera in the heart of the theater district..
Valerie Smaldone interviewed one of our generations best voices, in one of the most memorable evenings we've had in a long time. We laughed, we cried, we were in awe.
Here are a few things Phoebe shared with us:
Her real name is Phoebe Laub. Her name inspiration, Phoebe Snow is the name of a train.
She doesn't think of herself as a jazz or a folk singer, even though at times she was pigeonholed that way.
She was inspired early by Little Richard, The Rolling Stones, Delta Blues and Dixie Land Jazz.
She's a huge fan of Bonnie Raitt and Miley Cyrus. In fact, she was on a recent episode of Hannah Montana.
She is the voice of many commercial jingles for companies like Stouffers and Hallmark.
The love of her life was her daughter Valerie, who was born severly brain damaged and was expected to live no more than a few days. Valerie died two years ago at the age of 31. She lived with her mother for all of those years, and Phoebe says "she is still with her."
When her daughter was very young, and unresponsive to most stimuli, she discovered her listening to opera on the TV one day. Phoebe started to talk to her in an "operatic" voice and that is how they communicated.
Since then, Phoebe has studied opera and hopes to perform some form of opera on the stage one day.
She just released her first live album, "Phoebe Snow: Live" which features several songs she has never recorded before. Great CD. Get it now.
