City of Veils:  A Great Summer Read
Reviewer:  Lois Cooper
Saudi Arabia is no place for a woman.  Not an American woman, like Miriam.  Not even a Saudi woman, like Katya.  And most certainly not for Leila, the
Saudi photographer whose disfigured body washes up on a beach in Jeddah.

Miriam is returning to Saudi Arabia from a month back home in the United States.  The life she is returning to is not even close to the life she had planned on living. There are only a few more months to go on her husband’s contract to work in the Middle East, but that does not soften the hardship of obeying the rules of this repressive country.  When her husband goes missing, just a very short while after her return, her worst fears are set in motion—she is now a woman alone in a this male dominated society.

Katya is just one of a few woman forensic investigators in the office of the coroner.  She knows she is good at this work and is determined to prove herself.  The case of the of a mutilated filmmaker can be a career builder for her, but just how far can she go before she has gone too far.

Leila had a habit of angering a lot of the locals, and her newest project was just going to put her in further jeopardy.  She knew that breaking sexual and religious taboos would be dangerous, but she never reckoned that she was putting her life on the line.

The stories of these three women intertwine and transpire in Jeddah, the most unsavory of Saudi cities. There title is perfectly descriptive, this is a mystery shrouded in many layers of suspense.  There are scenes so vividly detailed that one can only hope that if there is to be a movie, it remains precisely true to the novel.

This is a wonderful vacation book – as long as your travel plans don’t take you to the Middle East! Available at Amazon and major book sellers.

Lois Cooper has loved to read ever since she learned how.  She hopes that she has passed that along to her three children.
