A road trip for ice cream!

Now that the July 4th holiday is behind us, the rush is on to savor the remaining weeks of summer. And in the summer culinary treat department, two food items remind me of the steamy season like nothing else. Lobster rolls and soft serve ice cream.
I've written about lobster rolls before, but now is the time for me to write about a cold, sweet, creamy and delicious summer treat at a Westchester destination spot... and the road trip to get there.

Here's how you do it.

Head North on the Saw Mill River Parkway to Somers, New York, known as "the cradle of the  American circus" (did you know that?) where routes 100 and 35 meet. Off on the side of this intersection, you'll find this kitschy throw back to another time. And the name adds to the nostalgia. King Kone. It's the place where people from far and wide gather on a steamy summer night to indulge in this great American dessert.

You can order soft serve or hard ice cream, egg creams and soda floats (there is nothing like a frosty root beer float!) King Kone is an individual business that is not a chain, and with no website. But there is a Facebook Fan Page!

Check it out and call 914.232.0571 if you want more information.

Oh and by the way, if you are still craving a lobster roll, King Kone serves up that delicious summer lunch item too!

It's one stop shopping at a road side stand at the intersection of two routes, and a trip back to a much simpler time.
