Theater inspiration and shopping nirvana.
In the last week I attended two Broadway shows. The first one is certainly one that focused on an important topic, and had great performances.
But the theater was half full and the show posted closing notices the day after I attended. I don't like to see any show close, because of all the talent and energy that goes into a show, not to mention money from the investors. But the show did puzzle me. It didn't seem to belong on Broadway. It was all over the map. I did a lot of "huh's" watching the
show. And the piece? Enron.
The very next night I attended a show that I thought might not translate well to Broadway. I had seen a one night benefit performance of this piece for the Actors' Fund a few years before and it was very well received. The show's title was changed to Everyday Rapture starring Sherie Rene Scott and it was retooled. But would it work on the big stage? Would a one woman show (essentially) engage the audience and would her story, a Kansas born Mennonite's journey from religious suppression in the mid-west to creative liberation in Manhattan, resonate?
The answers are yes, yes and yes.
Although highly personal for Sherie Rene Scott, the musical she co -wrote with Dick Scanlan (they are up for a Tony for best book of a musical) is extremely universal.
Funny, moving, poignant and very entertaining. Sherie is up for a Tony for her performance, as well. Simply put, Ms. Scott is a superstar. Go to see this lovely piece of musical theater.
Now on to an amazing yearly sale that you should know about. The Posh sale benefits Lighthouse International, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting vision loss through prevention, treatment and empowerment.
The four-day sale features thousands of items, including new and gently worn clothing, shoes and accessories for women, men and children. New items are replenished daily.
It is a place where you will get amazing and I mean amazing items. A few years ago, I picked up a vintage size 2 midnight blue Dior suit that fits like a glove.
I have shoes, and boots from last year's sale, as well as new French tops that are so ...French!
Kim Cattrall is the celebrity spokesperson for the Posh sale and always contributes items from her wardrobe for the event. I am still mourning passing on a pair of gorgeous like new boots that she donated in perfect condition last year. Ms. Cattrall and I share the same shoe size!
Just a couple of the great items available during the POSH sale to benefit the Lighthouse this weekend.
The Posh sale runs Thursday through Saturday 11 am to 7 PM, Sunday 11 to 5. The Lighthouse is at 111 East 59th Street
You must go. It is amazing. And you'll remember to circle your calendar for the POSH sale every May hereafter.
And finally this Friday is the night of A Ray of Hope: On the Path to Cure Ovarian Cancer starring Ray Romano. Ray is flying in from LA for this benefit and he will perform his Vegas style comedy act. Along with Ray, Jon Manfrellotti from Men of a Certain Age, Tony nominated powerhouse Orfeh and Broadway performer Craig Schulman will also
perform. I will be the emcee, and am co-producing the event with Linda John, Ray's first cousin, and a recent survivor of ovarian cancer.
