Gate Guru
Navigate the Airport on Your iPhone — Gate Guru — With this free app on your phone you’ll no longer be wandering aimlessly through unknown territory wondering if there’s  something better around the next bend or further down the corridor. Instead, you’ll know exactly what to expect and where to go to find it. The info on Gate Guru is now also available on the KAYAK iPhone apps via the “airports” tab.

MedjetAssist — Don’t Leave Home without ItMedjet will arrange a “bedside to bedside” medical transfer to the hospital of your choice, wherever that may be — as long as a member is 150 miles or more away from home. There is no requirement that the transfer be medically necessary and no charge other than the nominal Medjet annual membership fee.

Skype Mobile Apps Keep You Plugged In — The Skype communication alternative is spreading through mobile phone technologies like wildfire. One of the most apparent advantages of using Skype is that whether the cell companies like it or not, cheaper calling is on the way. Skype can be used to make free calls, and that includes all international calls. Cell phone companies fought and scratched against this concept, but realized that there was no way around it.

Protect Yourself from Airborne Germs While Traveling  According to the New York Times, almost 90 percent of traveling Americans identify germs as a real concern when they are flying. However, sanitizing products can be hard to come by once you take to the air. Nozin is an antiseptic solution that may help protect you from catching a cold or other airborne viruses while in-flight. Nozin comes either in a small bottle with cotton swabs or as individual, single-use swabs with the solution already inside. Another simple precaution is to use hand sanitizer to protect against germs.

Exercise Flash Cards — Fit for Travel — Sitting on a plane for hours at a time can  really leave you in need of a good stretch, particularly now that there are additional restrictions regarding moving about in the cabin. The FitDeck Travel set of 26 cards offers exercises that can be performed right in your plane seat. Each one is clearly illustrated and explained and all the exercises in the deck are appropriate for any level of fitness.

Airline Overbooking  As many of us find out the hard way – booking an airline reservation doesn’t mean the airlines are actually going to put us on our intended flight. The majority of airlines overbook each flight to cope with cancellations, no-shows and missed connections — but when they get it wrong, air-travelers pay the price.

Studies show that fewer and fewer flyers are willing volunteer to take a later flight. The Department of Transportation reports that the number of travelers bumped against their will soared more than 45% between 2005 and 2009.

The In-Flight Insider says one way to combat this problem is to build trouble into your schedule.

Tip #1 – First Flight Out If you really need to make it home on a certain day, book the first flight out that morning. That way, if your flight runs into time delays, you have priority over the people on later flights.

Tip #2 – Early bird gets the worm TSA says get there an hour early – If your flight is packed, try getting there 90 minutes early to secure your seat. And – if you’re really nice – you can still get your upgrade to first class.

Tip #3 – Be a Weather Watcher Take the weather and traffic into account. If you’re flying to the Southeast in the summer (watch for thunderstorms). If you’re flying into the Northeast, air traffic is always a factor.

Use these In-Flight Insider tips to make your escape and overcome the “overbooking travel bug!”
