150 women and men joined The Three Tomatoes, the Metro New York Chapter of the US National Committee for UNIFEM, and several other leading women’s organizations on April 6, 2010 to show their support for the United Nations/UNIFEM campaign “Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women” .This is a global call for action on ending violence against women and girls through social mobilization.
The event took place at the Taipei Cultural Center in New York City.
Panel Discussion: Violence Against Women: The Pandemic, The Consequences, and What We Can Do
The reception will be followed by a very informative panel discussion with esteemed experts on the far reaching consequences of violence against women. The panel will be moderated by media personality Valerie Smaldone, and will educate us on the issues, but more importantly focus on what we can do to end violence against women including taking action through the Say No UniTE global coalition of individuals, organizations, governments and the private sector to realize a vision that is ambitious, but must never be impossible – a future that is free from violence against women and girls.

UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman is the Spokesperson of Say NO.
Say NO aims to trigger and highlight actions by individuals, governments and civil society partners. Actions can range from reaching out to students at schools, to volunteering at local shelters, advocating for legislation or donating funds towards programs that protect women and girls from violence. Approximately 1 out of every 3 women worldwide has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. It happens everywhere – at home and at work, on the streets and in schools, during peacetime and in conflict. Violence against women and girls has far- reaching consequences, harming families and communities, stunting human development, and undermining economic growth. Everyone has a role to play in combating this global pandemic.
