PTA Mom is the mother of three young kids age 8 and under who somehow either start out in the bed or end up there at some point during the night. She has a demanding job trying to make stuff up all day, coaches’ softball and cheerleading teams--which is like herding cats, a husband who at all times would rather be golfing and has a nanny with a tramp stamp. She loves red wine, Ciroc vodka and has gotten pretty good at the BBQ. Do not ask her to ever do the laundry as she doesn’t separate whites from darks and thinks Mr. Clean is really one of those hot bald guys. Come visit on a Friday during the summer and you are bound to hear some bad Karaoke. Just don’t ask her to remove the bag or you’d see her forked tongue.
She chooses to remain anonymous. Do you blame her?
Dear Lemon Lima is a movie starring teenagers, but will appeal to tomatoes too. I was given a copy to review and thought- great, another movie about teenage love gone bye-bye, but was pleasantly surprised. It is poignant and enjoyable. The movie takes place in Fairbanks, Alaska with half-Eskimo high schooler Vanessa Lemor (played by Savanah Wiltfong) pursuing her teenage crush, Phillip. Phillip comes from wealth and privilege and Vanessa is being raised by a single Mom who drives a car where the back seat belts don’t work anymore. Philip breaks up with her (again) breaking her heart, so she pursues him by enrolling in his private high school and fits in with, well… just about no one…at first.
The movie starts as a love story—your typical teenage crush where you write in your diary, doodle, see cute little bunnies all the time and try to get your love interest’s attention by embarrassing yourself—but morphs into a story about fitting in and overcoming obstacles. It’s a story about heart and accepting people for who they are. This would be a great movie to show to teenagers to teach them how to accept people for who they are, no matter how different they may be.
It’s very quirky-- along the lines of Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, Napoleon Dynamite and Garden State. It’s simple, sweet and although it is based on a love story, the real love is in the friendships the main character builds as she realizes her 13- year old crush is sort of a jerk. I think we’ve all been there-- that a-hah moment when you realize that your friends accept you for you, and boyfriends will come and go.
Two of the adult actors that stand out are Melissa Leo, who is nominated for an Oscar for The Fighter and also had a nomination for her work in Frozen River, and Beth Grant, who was in Little Miss Sunshine and Donnie Darko. Melissa Leo plays the mother to Hercules (played by Zane Huett- he plays Parker Scavo on Desperate Housewives)-a geeky, red-headed boy (think Alfred E. Newman, but with better teeth) with a collection of dead bugs who you instantly want to protect from getting bullied. He is so innocently sweet and doesn’t fit in with any of the other school kids. He’s not a loveable loser but a loveable kind friend to Vanessa and her band of merry misfits. Melissa Leo’s role as his overprotective, Little House on the Prairie dressing and completely clueless to the needs of her child, mother is bizarre, but well done.
Beth Grant is terrific as the High School Principal- she reminded me of Rhoda- and stole all the scenes she was in. I think everyone needs a Principal like her. The scenes when Vanessa is outside the office waiting to see the Principal are classic.
The movie won tons of independent film awards, but don’t see it because of that, see it because it will put a smile on your face. It is rated PG-13 and is being released on March 4 both as a theatrical release and VOD. Check out the website- it’s also enjoyable http://www.dearlemonlimamovie.com.
