Mother’s Day is very special, especially between a mother and a daughter. I know that all of you think it gets even more special when the daughter becomes a mother too, but I beg to differ. It becomes even more special when your mother becomes your best friend. During our youth (we are nightmares…), during our teenage years (we become bitches…) and then at that certain age (in my case 19), my mother said “you became a human being”. Since that time, my mother has been my best friend – the one I turned to when I was happy, sad, angry - you name it – but mostly I turned to her as my friend.
I had the most unusual relationship with my mother – we told each other everything (and I mean everything!), we hung out, we sang karaoke, we just enjoyed each other. I mention this because I know that the Head Tomato is lucky enough to share this relationship with her daughter (my bestest!). I want to take this opportunity to tell you all to TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT WHILE YOU CAN!
This used to be one of my favorite days…it was a chance to hang out with my best friends – my mother and my sister (both great mothers!) –figure out a fun and interesting way to spend the day (usually laughing till we were crying). Unfortunately, my mother became suddenly ill in January. I was able to have one last birthday with her (hers and mine) and after three weeks, she passed away. Fortunately for her, she did not suffer and was peaceful. Unfortunately, for the rest of us, we were not able to tell her things we wanted to. I am very grateful because I can honestly say that during my adult life (after becoming a “human being”) that I have no regrets when it comes to my relationship with my mother….we always had a great time!
I am grateful that I have my several other mothers to celebrate this year: my sister, my stepmother, my other Mom--Susan, who have made me the woman I am today. And I will quote a key chain my mother gave me when I turned 18, “I’m always in trouble but it’s so much fun!” and I don’t think we’d have it any other way!
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. I miss you. Xoxo
